I will be searching for a few red box cars very soon. Obviously ebay will be my main venue. If the car does not come in the box I was wondering if the following two questions asked to the seller would confirm they are red box: 1) Is the frame made of metal? 2) Are there screws holding the trucks in place? I seem to remember the 70's brown box rolling stock to be all plastic and the trucks were not held in place with a screws. Anything else I need to ask? Thanks in advance.

Depends on which specific cars, roadnames, and /or variants you're looking for. It's worth noting there were a few brownbox cars issued with metal parts... and some redbox cars got plastic and/or snap-in trucks. However, these are a fairly minute sampling, so your rule of thumb is generally correct.
