I am a total stranger to electric trains but have an old tyco T622 HO set in original box (damaged) that I got as a kid in 1960. There are a couple of Varney cars in the box as well including a powered caboose. I am interested in a value for this set and in purchsing tracks and a power pack or transformer. I would really apprecite any advice on how to learn more about the set and buying the parts to get it up and running again. Thanks!

Transformers are a dime a dozen, Ssherwood. You can get cheap Tyco power packs at shows for $5 or less.

Varney's are neat cars, some are worth something. Not sure on Tyco set values, though, no experience there. Other guys here will have to help you there. You can visit this site below, your set is at the very bottom, called Mammoth of the rails, with a Mikado steam engine 2-8-2.

One thing you may want to do is post pictures of the set, and tell us what's missing. Track nowadays is better quality nickel , not brass. Transformers have come a long way, too, may be better to upgrade to more modern types, ie more expensive. We'll try to help if possible.

Hard to say without pictures, but I bet you're looking at something that's worth $50-100. Not much value, but if it's a complete set with packaging it sometimes goes to the higher end of that. Also, it depends on where you sell it. Where I'm at, the train shows sell Tyco for nothing. Others pay much more. It's highly variable. Unless you wan t to keep it with the packaging as a "collectible", I'd just add to it and use it to start.

As for getting it up and running, it depends on whether or not you have a hobby shop. If so, they can help you. They'll probably frown at the loco, but don't let that discourage you. All you need from them is some track, any brand of HO scale code 100. Code 100 is basically the size of the rail, for starting out I would stay away from anything code 83. Used track is dirt cheap. New track isn't real costly, unless you go with the kind that has plastic roadbed attached. It's great for simple layouts, but costs more.

The transformers are easy too. If you don't have a hobby shop, you should be able to find one on ebay cheap. If you want something simple and inexpensive, go with a Life-Like, Bachmann, or Tyco transformer. That will get you started.

Finally, if you just want a quick way to start, you can get good deals on starter sets. I like Athearn Iron Horse sets, but Bachmann sets are cheaper and easy to find at places like Hobby Lobby (look online for 40% coupons). Any HO scale starter set will have the basics to get you back on track.

When you get track and a transformer, you'll probably have to clean the loco. If you're still interested then, we can tell you exactly what to do. It will probably take some work to get it running smoothly.

The sky's the limit. Almost any HO gear will work with what you have. Hobby shops, ebay and train shows are the places to go. The only thing other advice I have is to avoid DCC items--that's a modern digital control system. You want plain old DC equipment, and there's plenty available.
