A couple weeks ago the East Frankfort Shops rolled out some more custom-painted Saint Canard Midland equipment, including a couple Athearn Gons, like this one:

That's a vintage paint scheme using the STC's older reporting marks, typography, and herald. I intended it to be used in a more "modern" setting... so it would have to look well-worn and beat up. Like THIS:

I've always thought buying "junk loads" for gondolas was pretty silly, even though I have done so and the commercial ones generally do look pretty good. But really, is there a model railroader on earth who doesn't have a bunch of junk?!
So, for the past couple years I've been saving all the effluvia and detritus from the workbench. Broken parts, sprue chunks, leftover bits, shavings, filings... pretty much everything left behind when any given project is done.
Way I see it, real railroads use gons for all the junk that comes from the business. So why should a model line be any different? Half the fun is picking out what everything is!
The dents were made with an old soldering/wood burning iron and a chisel blade. First time I ever attempted something like this. Pretty pleased with the results, but a couple "oops" moments are evident. But with a little technique refinement, I think I might be on to something.

For anyone wondering: after a rebuild session, the new-image STC gons look more like this:

That one will get weathered too (mostly to hide the decal film which, for some reason, showed up more on this than any other car I've done), but not as severely.

Okay, you guys inspired me to play along. Here's an old Mantua with a load of junk. I threw this together in a couple minutes, then hit it with a couple different spray paints. It's on a piece of posterboard, so I could drop it in:

Hi All,
Nice junk! LOL! I love the work guys. I can not take credit for mine as It came to me this way. It is an AHM gondola with what looks like aluminum shavings. I need to dig out a set of trucks and get it on the road.
Thanks for looking. Mike

I'm seeing a pattern here. I'll chip in. This is an in-progress project. It is a Tyco UP gondola I'm weathering up for my rail scrapping facility. I'm chopping up sections of old rail and painting it. When I'm done the car will be full of loose weathered rail. This is just the first coat. It needs more work. More Rust!

I know what you mean, it is SO yellow. I love how all the old tyco sets were a weird mix of every imaginable line. SF engine, UP gondola, BN boxcar, etc. I guess the mix of colors must have sold better than a consist of all one color/company. The UP gondola is really growing on me now that it is rusting up. I'll try to post some photos when it is done and full of a load of rail.

I know what you mean. I went through a phase--sometimes I'm still in it--where I ran consists of all one road's cars. I had a serious BN and SF boxcar addiction for a few years (separate of course, as it was pre-merger.) It's a lot more fun nowadays to mix and match.

Great loaded gons everyone... these have been a lot of fun to make.
Here's the "new" one finished with its load and lightly weathered.
