These three shells were in a "free" box at a show the other day, so of course I snapped them up. The top two I know are Lionel. If anyone knows where to get another horn for the GP9 I'd really appreciate it, but other than that they're no mystery.

What I don't know is what the red shell is. It looks pretty cheap--not exactly prototype work. At first I thought it looked like Marx. Then the "L" in the numbering made me think Lionel. I don't know...what is it?

I'm pretty sure that has to be the classic Marx F3... their Union Pacific F was similarly fanciful. While Lionel did a lot of stupid things, they did try to keep the HO line fairly authentic. Besides, most of the Lionel HO from that time was Athearn or Rivarossi under the paint. I've never seen that shell attributed to any Lionel production.... or anyone but Marx for that matter. I think the modern Model Power FT has its roots in the Marx shell but it is modified quite a bit from that.

Hi B77. When I saw the The Picture of your Santa Fe shell. I knew I had seen it before...
The L-3003 Santa Fe is a Gilbert / Flyer Shell. Made in 1962 for Flyer by the same company that was making the shells for Marx. That is why the similarity.

The Marx Drive with the Pilot as part of the Frame will fit it. But for Collector value you need to find the Flyer version of the drive. I have a damaged one somewhere, will post pictures once I find it... Very Nice Find... Especially for Free....
