Does anybody know how to remove lettering from a Bachmann SF coach like this,
without damaging painting? - Erich

Try windex or alcohol...... Try using it on a Q-Tip and try a small area in case it starts to ruin the paint.

i use nail varish remover, but test on a small out of site area,as all removers are different,as are the paints and plastics, the older the model the harder the tampos are to remove, new ones are fairly easy ken

I start with diluted CSC degreaser, and work up to full strength. That keeps it safe, as you start out. Yeah, I know, the name is different now, but it still comes in a purple jug/bottle from most auto stores.

If that does't get it, you might need Pine-sol or nail-varnish remover (acetone/spirits) like Ken said. Just be very careful, since both of these will strip paint like crazy, and even eat the plastic. Every silkscreen/paint/plastic combination has its quirks, so - as the guys already said - experiment on a safe area!

I've yet to find a Tyco car that needs a harsher solution than CSC degreaser. It never hurts the plastic at all, and can be cut with water, if you apply a little more elbow grease.

I also agree that a Q-tip is the way to go. It's just abrasive enough to remove the lettering and allows for precise control. Best of luck.

Try a good ol' pencil eraser. Rub the letters with a soft pencil eraser. I've done that with one of my passenger cars. Rubbed the letters off and did not affect the paint underneath.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

I have an old Bachmann F-unit shell sitting on my layout which I painted with watered down brown paint to make it look rusty. The writing on the side started peeling off with just the water. If your car is anything like my engine, it shouldn't be hard to get the lettering off. NC Shortlines' eraser trick is probably a good place to start.
