This is a very "shining" example of Tyco's best, a chromed Shell Tanker car. It just GLEAMS. I think most of the cars in this group I got as a box lot from a guy were hardly, if ever, played with. Pretty nice examples I've found. Some of the boxes are unmarked/stamped, was that normal? Anyway, here's my polished tanker -

I could chose from so many, but I liked this one best today.

Since the chrome is more of a paint than actual plating, once it's dulled, you can't really polish it back to brilliance. It's just either oxidized or thinned out. Only thing to do is to re-plate the car with the chrome finish. Just no hope for it at that point of aging.

Yeah, it's a shame that the chrome finish can't be re-touched. At least I haven't found a good way to do it!
No Sunoco chrome, yet? Who's gonna' put that one up?

I agree there's no way to fix the chrome. The best bet is to find them in unopened boxes.

Chromed plastic can be replated. Auto restorers do it all the time. It's just a matter of what it's worth to you and how much liquid funds you have; it may not be able to be done economically.
Apparently some folks that do plating at home have managed to chrome plastic as well by first coating it with copper conductive paint.

But I think the issue here is that by replating you would destroy all the other painted logos and such, thus making it a completely different item.

Hey 'bus, the way the finish is worn off, it looks 100% realistic. All the right patterns for daily use...
Add in natural lighting with "bin-cam" and it's spot on! No weathering req'd.
I like it, a lot! -TKRR

Dupli-Color makes a pretty good chrome substitute for really small parts.
Granted- it isn't as good as others... but the price is right.
If y'all are serious about re-chroming... I've heard this is the best stuff from countless modelers. It is pricey though. http://www.alsacorp.com/products/mirrachrome/mirrachrome.htm
And it comes in a can kit too... http://www.alsacorp.com/killercans.htm
