Hi All,
Does anyone have any info on this set? The locomotive is marked Tyco Mantua 2231
I see only a few resources online.
One old ad seems to indicate this is a set from the mid 1950s and another website seems to indicate that these cars are "lost cars" that either were never produced or that we don't have examples of?
Here are my photos

Here are the websites with the ads and the "lost cars" story.

Hi,
I know the quote you are referring to about the "lost cars". That statement was made to signify that the body styles that were pictured were never produced in that roadname, he is not referring to this road name per se. Just went back to that site to see what was pictured there. Those 4 body styles weren't produced at that time althought the "Tyco Streamliner" roadname was. You have the 3 cars they produced during that period which are, in order you have them lashed up, coach-combine-observation cars.
The passenger cars were made 1955-1957 and were sold individually those years. In 1956 and 1957 the 3 cars you have were sold as a set with the engine you have. So I would say these are 56 or 57.

Thanks Todd. I collect old Mego toys and other stuff from the 70s but these trains are new to me. These were a friend of the family's who has no relatives so she donated them to a local church. I paid about $70 for everything figuring if nothing else the money would help the church. I'll probably just sell them and see what I can get for them but I like to know what I'm selling before I list it.
The thought though is that now that I've held them in my hands I think these old trains are pretty cool! I could see myself starting a collection of these too!
Its fun to learn and I always appreciate those that are in the hobby and take time to school us rookies.
Best,
superunderdoggie

Todd's information is correct. I have a set of those in original boxes, and I think yours *should* have the "Tyco Streamliner" herald on the letterbands. Although I have also seen these made with "Santa Fe" and "Baltimore and Ohio" lettering, in the same color scheme (which was grossly incorrect for either one, oops).
The original decals were thick adhesive plastic film, similar to generic clear tape. It tends to peel up and leave a nasty residue.
If you are interested in restoring the lettering, I may be able to help. I have restored and refurbished several sets of these cars, and can make decals for the "Tyco Streamliner" bands. They won't be the thick film of the originals, but will restore the cosmetic appearance.
