any ideas of the maker ken
 athearn make a all plastic one but this is metal chassis and old,sprung trucks but different number

Hi Ken, that is a Athearn Virginian Caboose Shell, 1217 is the correct number for the Athearn Version. let me see a picture of the bottom. Carl

| I have one of those in ATSF brown. It has a metal chassie with sprung trucks. Unfortunately the coupler box is mounted to low on mine and it uncouples easily on hills.

That's one of the more scarce Athearn cabooses - it was made only to go along with their version of the Lionel rectifier electric loco, in 1958-59.
Possibly an MDC frame, there was a transition period of MDC products where they used their own die-cast frames but Athearn shells, before tooling their own shells.
