While checking out toys and antiques in the Craigslist listings,I ran across an ad for a box of Tyco and other makes trains. So I emailed, and today I stopped on the way home to check it out. He'd sold another box already, this one had half Tyco and half Penn Line cars, with a Life Like thrown in. Had Accessories as well ( cattle station, others, I'll do pics and stuff tomorrow ). He had two Tyco diesels, a Chessie 4015 Tyco, and a Coming Round the Mountain diesel ( trucks had both metal wheel sets on same side, so I imagine they couldn't get it to run. LOL ). Chessie didn't respond to battery power, either. I offered 50, he countered with 75, I went to 60 and no more, and he sold it to me. Not a great bargain, but with the amount of stuff there, I think it was a reasonable amount. The cattle loading accessory had both the truck AND the cattle there. :) The 3-axle Coke tanker is nice and complete, the 3-axle Gulf tanker has both trucks with broken tabs on the pins, so it'll need repairs. The Life Life Ballantine wine car is wild, a glow-in-the-dark yellow-green color with silver roof. The Penn Line N&W hopper had it's zinc weight expanding and cracking, it had bent out and cracked both sides at the middle area. I removed the weight to relieve the stress. Other Tycos include the Autoloader, a BN green hopper, the matching caboose for the Mountain diesel, and others. I left most out in the car so the wife wouldn't see them yet. While she's out running morning errands, I'll bring them in and get them photo'd for the Forum. I like the old Penn Line cars, these came with correct boxes, too. So while not a huge bargain, it's still a pretty good deal for the number of items I got. At 3-5 dollar per car show pricing, I did better than that I think. I'll sort thru the accessories to see what's missing if anything. No McD's or KFC's or anything rare, I don't think ( I looked ). Never know what's in the bottom of the box, though. Some brass and steel track, a transformer, and who knows what else yet. Well, a long day, time for an early bedtime. Look for photos here in the Craigslist post either Friday or Saturday.

Nice find AMC! My wife didn't care how much of the train stuff I hauled in.... I think she enjoyed it as much as I did, or atleast was happy for me to enjoy it..
As for the broken trucks, I am soon going to find a fix for them. There's many different plastic repair materials in the autobody feild. I believe I can find one that will work by adding a "flexable" agent to the mix.

You have a great wife! I live in a small Cape Cod, and I've about filled it up with my "stuff"...and keep adding to it. I've GOT to sort out and get rid of much unused stuff this winter.

I was thinking of using a small metal formed bracket that would fit down in the V of the remaining peg stub, and have flaired wings at the top to fit into the hole. The two holes on either side of the pivot pin would be used to hold the bracket in securely, if it's designed right. OR, I just checked, my nipple nut conversion may work! I just tried one, it's a bicycle spoke nut, the threads are 1.8mmm , which is actually 2-56, or it works. The shaft of the nut is REALLY tight in the hole, I think I'll have to file it out a bit, but it would give the 3-dome tanker a threaded mounting stud. I think I'll try it today, and post it later, if I have the time to get to it while the wife is gone running errands ( my day off, still on 32-hour weeks ). Worth a shot, I've got a Gulf tanker currently truckless, at least the broken ones were in the box with it. I think by shaving off the remaining stub, and using a small screw and washer in one of the side holes, the truck will only shift about 1/16 inch or so, not enough to notice. I'll have to see if I can make it work. All for now,
Jerry

UPDATE - Pictures of Tyco engines and Penn Line/Varney/LL/Tyco rolling stock on Hot Tub
Got them out this Saturday morning, and set'em up for the shoot. Here's the overall collection I paid $60 for -

Quite a bit of stuff! I think 60 wasn't too much to pay for what I got. I'm happy with the deal.
here's the Tyco stuff first, cars and engines -

Not all the boxes are correct, but most are. Here's the buildings -

The Interlocking Tower and Sand buildings are wrong, there's a Motel in the Interlocking box, and just bits left of the Sand building. The others are fairly complete that I can see.
Ok, here's the Penn Line / Varney cars. Boxes are correct, I guess Penn Line resold the Varney cars -

Next are the 4 Athearn and lone Life Like cars in the herd -

I like that yellow-green LL car, with some inside lighting, it'll glow ghastly! LOL.
Here's the Rocky MountainTYco engine -

As you can see, the brass wheels are on the same side, and the coupler mounting is correct, so I guess a bottom plate removal and gear swap is in order.
Next is the Tyco Chessie, now THIS is interesting , I think the factory screwed up and mounted the Pinion gear backwards. There is NO wear under the gear, the bluing is still on the metal, so I think this came that way. Motor will barely turn over. Big gear is stripped to uselessness. I have spares, thankfully. Shell looks brand new, unused or damaged ( duh, wouldnt' run ! ). One wire was broken as well.

The bottom photo above is of a correct PT motor with the pinion gear flat side out. I guess anything can happen at the factory. The wire was broken to the motor as well, so it wasn't running at all when I got it. The motor bumped once or twice, but with the gear skewed, it wasn't happy. I haven't tried the Rocky Mountain engine yet, will test it shortly and remount the axles properly.
Overall, a decent haul for the money, I like Varney as well, and with the boxes, my first Penn Lines, I'm happy as a collector. Hopefully the Chessie will be running again soon, either with a new gear, or replacing the original motor. Can't spend all day on trains, I have other stuff to do, but will get to it later tonight I'm sure. Hope you enjoyed the show!

That backwards pinion is the reason the reduction gear is stripped. The flange on the pinion -- aside from the rib jutting up from the bottom cover on that version -- is the only thing keeping the reduction gear from walking off the pin and out of mesh.

Well, I took apart the Rocky Mountain engine to see why it wouldn't run ( the light DID light, but no power to wheels ), and found a broken wire to this motor, much like the Chessie before. Lightbulb wire was working, though. When I touched power to the motor contacts, it screamed like a mouse getting it's crotch kicked, so I think it needs a bit of lube as well. And looking at it, I'll have to move the axles in the non-powered end, not the motor end. No biggie. I doubt either engine ever ran much on the track, considering the problems they both have. They both look almost brand new. Amazing.

UPDATE - Rocky and Chessie undergo power surgery, both emerge restored and energized, recuperating in the Tyco roundhouse.
The two (powered ) engines in the box lot above have been taken apart, the wires resoldered, and in Chessie's case, some serious gear overhaul and replacement. She was lubed up, and hairs removed from her gear posts. Running fine now with original engine and a replacement gear. Rocky got reassembled before lubing the motor bearing, and he's a bit noisy, so may have to have some more "minor" surgery to restore him to active condition. Nothing a drop of oil won't fix, hopefully. Overall a successful evening of Tyco tinkering. Repaired my Marx auto-loader/flat car with a new Model Power truck ( exact replacement and fit, yay! ), so another good feeling of accomplishment there. Think I"ll call it a night for train work, all's well that ends well. I'll tend to Rocky tomorrow.

Great photos, AMC. Rocky's shell looks in good nick. Will make a fine loco when he's calmed down a bit.
You sure the Ballantine Ale car isn't really an Atomic Energy Agency car in disguise? It's got radioactive charm!
