I have a Tyco Spirit of '76 locomotive that I got as a kid circa 1976-7 when I was 6 or 7 years old. At some point in the 80's, the thing stopped working, and I think I took out whatever necessary to get the wheels free-rolling so that it could be used as a dummy. Now, I am getting back into the hobby and would really like to get it working again, as it (and the rest of that over-under set) obviously has much sentimental value. Ideally, I'd like to get a cheap working model from the same era with the same chassis and just replace the body with my Spirit o' 76 body. Can that be done? What models would be compatible? Where would I get one? Any other suggestions? I've never really worked on these before (other than to gut them to make dummies ).
Thanks for your help.
Tony

Hi Tony Brian here. Here is a video i made on power torque motors. You can use any motor from a running Tyco diesel except the Mantua / Tyco GP20 as the mounts are different. All Tyco diesels are the same - all you have to do is put the trucks that are correct on the bottom of motor for your engine- watch video below - i also have video's on Tyco spirit of 76. PM me or post other questions - We will help you - some members may have extra running motors to sell or give you. Tyco made 2 diesels for the Spirit of 76 - If you have 4 wheels front and rear - it is an Alco 430 model and if you have 3 wheels front and rear - it is the Alco 630.

| Thank you very much, Brian. That is very helpful. I'll PM you photos of the engine. It's an ALCO 430, I believe. It is the third permutation of the '76 model with the blue top and the white nose with the circular spirit of '76 logo on the nose.

Brian, it turns out that I can neither e-mail you or PM you because I am a new member of the forum. So, I am going to try to post photos of the loco and motor in my photo gallery on this site. If that doesn't work, I placed photos on one of my webpages (just scroll down, and you'll see them: http://www.knuckleheadquarters.net/trains.html
Thanks for your help

Tony, you're missing the large reduction gear, the smaller combination gear that goes between that and the driven wheels, and the center set of dummy wheels. Any of those can be found in a Tyco 8 wheel diesel with a Power Torque drive. Look for junkers on eBay, or maybe someone on the forum has parts.

Tony - You have a first generation power torque - one screw on bottom of truck - all gearing from other power torques will work with this. my email is brianandginger@bellsouth.net if you need to email me in future - if there is a restriction on forum as you say because you are new - it is only temporary

Brian,
I got a donor train off of ebay, and replaced the motor / trucks. The Spirit of '76 is back in business. It was rather nostalgic seeing the old gal moving down the tracks just like it did when I got it as a 5 year old. Thanks for the help. The only things I need for it now is railing and one of those rear prong couplers.
