In a couple of books i got from th library they mention drainage ditches to add realism. Also talk about cutting with a hot wire.
They say scale wise the ditch should be 1 1/8" away from the edge of the ballast.
First of all seems way too far.
second scale wise how deep and how wide.
one more piece of track to attach and solder and i'm done for now. next comes hours of scenery, mountains, rivers, lakes, towns people, cows, farms.
Between spending time in the basement working on the R R and fighting with computer problems, my wife forgot my name

Construction has come to a stand still

Maybe try a google search and see what pictures turn up? That may give you an idea of the size and distance. Even if the measurements aren't exact, if it looks right to you chances are it will look right to people viewing your layout.
On a side note, I'm going to move this topic to the scenery section of the forum. Maybe it will get some more views

Sorry, not sure here either. I'd second the suggestion to go out in the real world and see what it looks like. Go with what looks right to you. Better to have it look right but be technically wrong with regard to scale than technically right but look all wrong. Sometimes you have to use forced perspective and such to make a small layout look right.

Well, you WOULDN'T want drainage ditches close to the tracks, they'll erode and cause more maintenance to the track. So it'd pay to have them as far away as possible. Since railroads have 50' of right-of-way, they would put any drainage as far from the tracks as possible. Googling says Right-of-way usually 25 feet from centerline of track on either side. So with a double track, you'd have about 50' of width. Somewhere in that width is the drainage area. But not RIGHT up against the ballast, because of erosion and maintenance issues.
Ah, here's what the UP Railroad says about it :
" The drainage ditch must be located at the outer limits of the railroad company right of way within 5 feet of property line and a minimum of 35 feet from centerline of nearest track with a flat bottom drainage ditch for future maintenance."

So, there ya go. In black and white, and mud all over.

took a walk to check out what ditches look like.
Found out not all ties are brown ,, some are bleached out.. also ballast at least where i was isn't gray it's black and white.
Rough dimension from edge of tie to the center of ditch was 15 ft. Some were more maintenence roads than ditches.
Out in the country they are deep and virtually impassable
