Well I have parts that I think will make a good loco. I have an Athern band drive cassie and a Chessie System Tyco shell. I just managed to get the motor turning after what appears to be multiple years of no use. The motor was not even screwed to the chassie. The shell looks as if it will line up well without the need for many modifications on the chassie.
Other than getting the motor going I sprayed the shell with some dull coat, I am not a fan of shinny shells.
To dos: 1. Clean the wheels. 2. Paint the frame. 3. Paint the trucks. 4. Grind the frame to fit the front of the shell, rear already fits. Both the shell and the frame have coupler mounts, one has to go. 5. Find windows for the shell. 6. Find a engineer figure. 7. Potentially find a plow. 8. Must find a matching caboose. (plan to make that lighted too.)
What will it pull? I have a set of three C&O covered hoppers and a few box cars.
Now pictures yet. Some to come.

I think with 8 wheels turning, it should be a decent puller. Depends on how good of grip the bands and the rods they're on have. I've toyed with some Athearn/Tyco hybrids, but never really done anything with it.
Interesting that you went with the dullcote. In my mind, there are two types of locos...models, which I expect to look a little more real, and "toys" which I like to be shiny and colorful. I rarely mix up the two, as I respect them both for what they are. Even if I stuck and Athearn chassis under a Tyco shell, I'd keep the shiny look. But that's just me.

I thought about leaving it shiny but almost all of the cars and engins I own are not shinny. I did not want it to stand out just for being shinny. The set of cars I plan to use with it are Katos that have that finish. 70% of my fleet are Roundhouse or Athern Blue Box kits, all have that type of finish. I agree that if the unit was in its original running order I would have preferred it unmodified.

Not much to see yet. ull coated shell. The motor runs. Need new parts to hold the shafts to the motor, old ones are dry rotted. Still need to clean the wheels and frame.
