Hi! Welcome to the forum! I'm also the father of a little girl, six years old now. Soon to be two girls. Model railroading is a great hobby for fathers and daughters. I know from experience that Chessie locos, rolling stock, etc. are a great way to get them interested because the mascot is a cute kitten. My girl loves to move around all the people and cars on our layout, so plan for some hands-on stuff like that.

As for your loco issues. the first step is to identify what type of motors you have. MU2 motors have a usually metal bottom plate over the motor with some access holes. I don't have pics right now, but there are some on this site. MU2 motors can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol (don't get it on the painted shell!) or contact cleaner. That should get them at least turning. PowerTorque motors are newer, the bottom plate is plastic held on by small phillips screws, and have gears on the side of the truck. They may need to have old grease removed, among other things.

The best way to get started on this is to post pictures of the undersides of your locos. Once we know what you have, we can go from there. My other advice is to pick up at least one newer loco...I always recommend basic Athearns, new or old...that is more reliable and requires less maintenance. That way you have something to run without worrying about maintenance. Tycos are fun, but tempermental.
