I did some web searching, and couldn't find anything like this. It has the top cupola, AND bay side windows. The truck mounts are tapered pins, the truck presses on, I've seen them before, but I don't remember who did those. And in reality, was there both a cupola and bay type caboose? Someone repainted this in chocolate brown, with a brush, and it's THICK. Looks like one side is melted near the roof, not sure what they were doing with it. I may just Simple Green it, and see what's underneath , and restart from there. Pretty unusual configuration, I thought. The end railings are silver wire, so I was thinking Model power maybe. I haven't checked on that yet, though. Anyway, thought I'd give ya a look-see and you can give me your opinion on it.

That one's new to me. Is the roof possibly a separate piece that's been put on a different body, then buried in paint?
On the other hand, why don't you ask that guy standing on it? Surely he knows.

No, it's entirely a 1-piece shell, no added pieces. I've never seen another one like it myself. It's either one or the other, first I've seen of both styles combined. Wish the dang makers would mark their stuff! I guess it costs more to put your name in the mold. Cheapskates....

Hi Jerry. The caboose was first made by Marx. It was also cataloged by Gilbert HO made by the same imported manufacturer as Marx used. I think it was also made by Model power using the Marx molds. Without seeing the original paint scheme you cannot tell which of the 3 it is. It is a very different looking caboose but, it was based on a prototype caboose Carl

It's an Erie , # 33618 . My wife has my SD card USB reader, so I can't post a pic yet. I soaked it for 12 hours in Simple Green, and it softened the paint enough to remove some of it with a paper towel. Unfortunately the stock white lettering underneath was also affected, so it's coming off some, too. It looks rather hideous with the brown and red, but I might leave it like that, like a rusty caboose with paint peeling off it, rust oozing everywhere. Ick! I'll post a pic of it as soon as I can. I tried searching "The Internet", but came up empty on any pic of it. Must be a scarce model!

Hi Jerry. 33618 was a Gilbert HO Erie Caboose. In original condition it was a hard car to find. The only thing that states that it is a Gilbert Caboose is the number. You can see a picture of it here. Carl

Nice! Thanks for sending that link, Carl. That is definitely it. Perused the site awhile, they had some interesting cars, and I doubt I've seen 99% of them in real life. The missle car, hay-throwing car, wow, some interesting cars, but I guess with low production, they are all hard to find compared to other makers of HO trains.

Ok, I got my SD card reader back, here's the Gilbert version of the Marx caboose. Trying to decide whether to leave it like this as a rusty relic, or finish stripping it. Opinions? jerry

UPDATE - Bayola now has Model Power / Marx trucks under it.
Since I got my replacement Model Power trucks yesterday, I pulled out this project again, and installed two of the trucks on the pins. This undercarriage has body-mount coupler pockets, so I don't need the truck-mount pieces. They just snapped on, and fit fine on the Gilbert base. So once I get some Kadee's on it, I can pull it around behind a consist soon.

I think I'm going to leave the paint as is for now, and just run it as a decrepit , run-down caboose in need of a paint job. I'm sure the guy in the blue suit won't mind, as he still has job, and won't complain in THIS economy.

| I'm really liking that caboose. Of course, the purist in me wants to see it cleaned up completely, but the rusty look isn't bad.
