Just won in Auction and now paid for:
Late 40's early 50's Varney Super Mikado.
So what make this special, ask any of the old timers. When new this was about $60! That was in the late 40's 50's!
Ball bearing 7 pole scew wound armature! AND my favourite part SPRUNG EQUALIZED DRIVERS. Oh yeah and about 2+LBS. As of now this is the heir-apparent to the "Queen of the Roster"!

Nice looking piece, Gareth! I have a few Varney Diesels, none running right now. but I've taken a shine to some of the older manufacturers like Varney, Penn Line, and others due to the metal castings and decent quality and detail. You got a nice steamer there.

Hey Ken:
Thats a 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" right? What was the class called on the GWR?
Appears to be an oil burner which suprises me. Thought all Brit Steam was coal?
Hornby? or Brass?

That's a real diamond in the rough, Gareth. Right now she looks like she flipped over and dug up the cinders, and is being towed to the backshop for repair.
Beautiful brass loco, Ken. She really gleams.

When It arrives, I'll take some detail shots and fire them off to a couple Vintage specialists I know, including Dan of Yardbird trains. They'll tell me what I need.
I'm hoping that none of the holes the grabrail posts anchor in are damaged. Fact is the mechanism; the sprung equalized chassis is far rarer than the shell and/or the motor.
I love these for the same reason that if I got another motorcyle I'd want a 1929 Scott Flying Squirrel or something of that ilk! Poor Sick B_____d!
There's still a Pacific amongst the Varney Super Series and who knows when that will come along. I had thought to pursue the "Reading" Mantua Atlantic/Pacific/Mikado but I think now that I have this it's time to do some building and modelling. There are still several pieces of older 70's-80's Van Hobbies-Samhongsa Canadian Steam I want to get but they are in the $500 + range so that will be in the order of 1-2/year. I will probably take a couple of "flyers" by grabbing a PRR 6-8-6 S-2 Turbine PRR and a Milwaukee Road EP-2 Bi-Polar in brass. They were unique engineering efforts. Anyway we'll see.

I don't think there's any way to transition from that fine locomotive to my LOTW, so I'll just throw it out there. Here's a BL2 I got with a couple cars for $6 shipped on ebay last week:

Slowly building my collection! Still gotta get C&O and Mopac!
BTW...I just noticed that my daughter put a guy on the roof of the plumbing store. I don't know what that's all about, but I'm sure she's got a great story to go with it. He's our "hobo".

Hey B77:
Well thanks for reminding me i have a P2K Rock Island Black & Red edition with the replacement wheelset I forgot about!
Don't know what the heck I'm gonna do with it. Anyone know if it's the same chassis as the P2k GP18? I coulld use the chassis with another shell.
Thanks, Gareth

Brass locos have an elegance all their own but no fancy metal from me, I'm afraid. So how about something cheap & cheerful?
Did I mention I have a thing for twins? Pictured above are Model Power F2A units, both powered but not matched so well. Chessie double F9's are my second favourite Tyco twin diesels and these F2's of mine are close enough to make me smile. Thanks vermillion, Model Power!

Gareth, that Varney Super Consol is one rare piece! They're also some of the nicest locomotives in HO scale next to brass. The seven pole motor is super smooth too.

Hey Kris:
Thanks buddy, I do have a Super Consolie, but the one I just acquired is a Super Mikado 2-8-2. They are beaut's I hope to eventually have all the Super Varney's. There is a Pacific as well and apparently a Super 4-8-4 Northern....
I was looking at the frame and the sprung drivers. It looks like it could be duplicated. Would like to build a Varney Super Berkshire.... hat would be cool.

Nice locos everyone! Here's one of mine, from across the pond in honor (honour!) of my buddy Ken-- It's a Wrenn, die-cast metal loco with plastic tender. It's "Mallard", the world steam speed record-holder (officially, at least).

| This reminds me of something I meant to tell everyone! Has anybody seen a show on BBC America (or plain BBC for you Brits) called James May's Toy Stories? I caught it the other day and they were building a 10 mile long OO scale train track. It was amazing to see the crowds gather to watch it come by as it traveled between two towns. They had kids make buildings and stuff along the way to decorate sections, but mostly it was just track. They started out with several locos, but the last survivor was a modern bullet train model. It didn't quite make it, but they still got it to travel 7 miles. The whole thing had numerous power issues, and they finally ended up throwing together a rolling battery pack that they pushed down the track behind the train to supply steady power.

Well my loco of the week has to be this RSO Switcher. It was one of my father's trains he bought just before I was born and I used it as a kid. The gear on the axel was stripped but NickelPlate759 had a spare one he sent my way. Thanks! It is now operational. I'm going to use it as a switcher for an industry on my layout. Probably a scrap steel recycling facility.
