HERE'S A LIONEL I PICKED UP, & here's the story behind it.
when our (me & my deceased brother) grandparents would come to visit us at our house when we was children, my grandfather (papaw) would allways (i mean allways) wouls stop & get me & my little bro a box of cracker jacks. that is just a great memory of him. my papaw died in nov. of 07, & when i seen this car it made me think of him so i had to buy it.
a year or so before he passed away they (him & mamaw) went out west on vacation & he had stopped & bought him a box of cracker jacks. he ate the whole box & mamaw asked him what kind of prize he had gotten it with them & he said there wasn't one. it turns out he ate the prize without knowing it.

Gonna go with my AHM Woolworth box car that I never even knew existed until about two years ago. It seems to be fairly rare as seldom seen on ebay. In the 70s Woolworth was really my favorite store to get my train cars and buildings etc.... though it was 45 Miles away!

Nice story, smokie, and a neat looking car as well. What exactly are Cracker Jacks anyway?
Might not have any Cracker Jacks but we do have Woolworths! No trains for sale in our version though, more's the pity. That's one sharp car, walt. Good to see it in the plastic, so to speak.

You're kidding, right? Ok, on the off-chance that you're NOT, they're caramel coated popcorn in a box with some nuts as well. Staple childhood product of the '70s. Prize was usually a little paper thing, not much, but a sticker or something. Actually, Wal-mart still sells it, you can even find it in the check-out lines sometimes. They have a clone called something else as well.

Some of my childhood Tyco car boxes have price tags on them from Woolworth, as one store was maybe 1.5 miles away, and I could walk to it or ride my bike. 75 cents, 1.00 were common prices back then on sale. The hobby store down the street had all the wonderful ( and way more expensive ) scale trains and brass, mostly out of my price range, although they too carried Tyco and other lower-priced cars in one section. Ah, the memories...

Hi Tycowolf. Here is link to a page describing what Crackerjacks are. As Jerry stated it is a camel coated popcorn and peanuts that has been around for over a hundred years. In 1912 When you purchased a box of crackerjacks there would be small novelty toy inside the box. Early toys were tin but, as the years went by the toys were made of plastic. Over the years many different toys and now some are highly collectable. Carl

Coolio! The three I bought all say "Banff" on them. I'm curious to see what other names they have.

Microbus has Dumpster-Cam going again!
AMC, We had a True Value Toy Town just about 3-1/2 that had some Tyco trains and slot cars etc. But alot of the stuff we had to order and wait for it to come.
Thank You!, Tykowolf for the comment on the Woolworth Box car. I really like this piece myself...

Nice catch, MB. Many of us can't live without our daily dose of "caffeine." Maybe Sanka isn't so popular these days because they use "caffein" instead. Either way, these advertising cars are high on my most wanted list.

All this snack talk is making me hungry! Trains or food? Hmmm. Never heard of Cracker Jacks before so thanks for the backstory, guys.
Timely Baby Ruth tank car, VintageHO, because Model Power are soon to release their model and I'd like it to look just like that.
Silhouettes in passenger cars! What ever happened to them? Which brings me to another endangered species:
The Combine car, here in heavyweight guise with IHC's take on UP armour yellow, posted here for advice on Fiddly Task #117: Painted handrails - yay or nay? If that be yay, then it makes sense to do so before getting busy with the glue, I reckon.
Big hands, slight farsightedness and itty-bitty plastic bits... shoulda gone O scale.

WOO HOO! I found I actually HAVE a Sanka car! It needs a little repair but I got it in a box that took me 7 months to open - from Tony L! I'm stocking up my new storage shelf and putting hundreds of cars & locos on it - and found a Sanka car with a GREAT paint job.

Here's my COTW: A while back I posted my HO Lionel SP 4-8-4. I needed some inexpensive matching cars. I found these Model Power, made in Brazil. They have interiors and metal wheels. This is the sleeper, but I also got the coach, diner, obs, and baggage. You can find them for around $7-10 each. They are the same length as a Mantua aluminum car (a bit longer than a Tyco car).

By the way, Ken and DaCheez, nice passenger cars. These seem to have real lasting power, as they've been through several incarnations (Penn Line, Varney, Life Like, etc). The CP and Santa Fe's look nice. The Amtraks are a bit cheezy (no pun intended!).

Love that Sears car! Just found a couple on Ebay, but the color looks 'more green' than yours. I wonder if it's the photo, or if Lionel used different shades. (I think yours resembles Sears green better, however).
