Mad? If so, I wish that kind of crazy would spread to the US. Build more steamers!

That's one gorgeous machine, Ken.

In Centralia, PA In 1962 a fire in a trash pit caused an underground coal fire that to this day is still burning. Here is the link to the history of that fire.. Carl

I think we need a hybrid steam / electric engine. The technology of the Diesel/electric can be applied here, C&O built a steam turbine engine, but instead of direct drive, they need to use a smaller one to power a generator, like the diesel does. You can run the steam /electric generator combo at optimum RPMs to generate the electricity needed to do what the Diesel/electric does. No wasted chugging, mechanical drivers, it'd all be neat and efficient. Anyone think it could work? Just swap out the diesel for a coal or gas-fired steam turbine, and away you go.

sweetness Tho wish I could get the Tornado in HO but I'll bet it uber expensive
Plus IF I had the money I'd have them build me one in USA type with cowcatchers (Who needs then with barbed wire crossing the nation Right? ) a orginal US steam whistle, lights & numberboards that are 70-100+ years old hehe

Fantastic videos, catfordken. Green British steam is a scene to behold.

You're welcome, Jerry!

Everything I know, I learnt from the Usborne Book of the Future, a kid's pop science softcover that belonged to my uncle so from the late 70's sounds about right. It contains all you need to found a modern, clean, efficient society but with development timeframes that are seriously out of whack. I am most looking forward to the 14 metre highjump at the Lunar Olympics in 2020.
