...when you're not running them?

More specifically, what do with the trains that you run fairly often. I know some of you have a (seemingly) endless amount of siding space. I've always had my cars and engines lined up on a shelf/counter behind my layout. Over the past few months however, that space has become too small

What do you guys do with all the layout overflow?

Not enough room for them in the car room, so most are in boxes, but we do have a daughter going to college this fall and I am trying to talk my wife into letting me have her room as a train room. So far I am losing this battle though.

Drawers, shelves, tables, chairs, boxes...you get the picture. It's a constant battle to find space.

Sez it all right there. I've got flat pizza-type boxes that I keep my rolling stock and some engines in, other smaller flat boxes shoe-sized for storing 2-3 engines at a time. No formal drawers or glass-fronted displays for my stuff. LOL. Cardboard and plastic, mostly.

Layout overflow? What luxury! The trains I have, such as they are, reside in a BIG blue box. The true tragedy is, the box is kept at my Aunt's. But it's alright, I have visiting rights most weekends and all this week!

My layout. Under it, hid behind the curtains, are many boxes of cars.

In another room are shelves with more trains.

I use the cheap metal 5 shelf units you get at Walmart for around 15 bucks each.
I combine two shelving units to double the capacity, and store the empty boxes at a friends basement.

Random freight cars are fun! If I had that many, I think I'd organize them by road where I could and pool the rest. Best of both worlds!

What do you do with your trains when there is a stupid virus scare.

I stare at them and wish that I was on a real one.

I still look at my collection even though I do not run them.

May change later tonight if I feel like testing a few engines.

LOL, lovely throwback to "Citizen Kane." Yes, we are much like Mr. Kane. Our most
precious "things" are the nostalgia and the deep pleasure it brings.

I confess my storage methods are simply awful and my attempts to improve it make it worse.
I keep thinking I'd like to construct a display cabinet to display my collection of Tyco
Billboard cars, but alas, they molder in cardboard boxes.

Here in El Paso, dust is a plague that never quits.

Have a few days off ahead, and look forward to some training time, having been given a
jump start by Ben the Microbusss. Point of fact, I have received so much inspiration
from members like WKS, DaCheez, Ben the Micro, RP Modelrailroads, what was the
name of the fellow who did repaints on the Hot Wheels??? Frank the TopTrain. I am
probably forgetting a few names of those who have given me such inspiration and
hours of enjoyment.

Most of mine are boxed up.... It sort of looks like the end of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark's where the Ark is put in the wharehouse.... Never to be seen again.

Similar to me but I keep them in draws in their boxes. Then I take out some to put on my floor layout.
Always good to see them even if you are busy. And this is the perfect time of the year to look at them.
