Hi Guys. Recently I won an eBay Auction for 9 engines. 2 New Bachmann N&W Bicentennial U33B, 1 New AHM GP-18 BN, 1 New Athearn FP45 Santa Fe, 1 New Athearn SW-7 CB & Q Switcher and 4 slightly used Athearn Power Chassises. (3 GEC and 1 GEB). As per the Listing none ran. On The Bachmann engines the Original drives were the early Garbage drives with the Square Brushes. Years ago I purchased a tray of New Bachmann drives with the newer Style Round Bushes. Replaced them in both engines and now they run excellent. The AHM GP-18 Motor had some crude stuck in between the Armature plates, causing a low speed short and arching. Cleaned the armature and the groove between the plates, now that engine runs Excellent. The Athearn Engines All needed new Motor Mounts and a Good cleaning on the wheels. Now they are all running excellent. I will post other pictures in the Individual sections. Carl

Did you replace the WHOLE drive, or just the brushes? That wasn't clear to me. sound like entire engine. So there are upgrade engines available?

Hi Jerry. The early 1970's Bachmann engines had a square Brush that used a very poor method of putting tension on the brushes. (See picture 1) They had just a copper arm that was suppose to keep tension. But, if it got hot it would lose the ability to put pressure on the bush and then it would cause the brush to arc and cause motor to cook. That is what happen to these 2 engines. The later 1980's type (see picture 2) had a much better brush set up with springs and better connection, reducing heat and making the motor run better. I just replaced the complete assembly with the newer style. The engine is only 4 wheel drive so it cannot pull a lot but, at least it now runs.. The best thing to do would be to get the 8 wheel Bachmann drive used in the autotrain engine. That would be a much better upgrade. I wonder if the shell would fit on the U33B Athearn made. Mmm Going to have to check it out later.. Carl
Update: I just checked the Athearn U33B could work. Would have to do some trimming on the sides near the fuel tank. But, the spacing between the Athearn trucks is farther apart then the Bachmann. the trucks would be hitting the pilots. Oh well..

Ah, yes, I see. My club friend with the junkbox collection, I remember seeing those #2 types in the motor bin. Didn't know what they went to, definitely not Tyco, though. So those are Bachmann . Ok, so now I know. Thanks for the edumacation.

I Could Use An Athearn Chassis, However Those Are Too Long. Gotta Have An SD9. For An E60CF.
