Hey guys, I have the chance to buy a Swiss SBB electric railcar made by a company called HAG. The green body shell is die cast metal,as is the grey underframe. It runs really well, and the owner is asking $45.00 for it. Is this a good price to pay for this railcar? And does anyone have info on the company, and the railcar?
Mucho Thanks, Carl T.

Thanks Ken for the links, The railcar I'm interested in is different than the one linked,I believe it's an older model from the 60's-70's.

Ken, I had a chance to check it's running condition. When I powered it up the lights came on,but it didn't move. Then I noticed a switch underneath, switched it and it run really well, and smooth. I guess the switch is for running off of overhead catenary.

I second that Carl, post some pictures after you get it. The Wikipedia picture has piqued my curiosity... that's a cool looking little electric. I'd love to see that Swiss drive, too.

Well Guys, I received my Fathers Day present a day early today. My HAG, SBB CFF electric railcar came home, and all I have to say is what a nice piece! The railcar is mostly die cast metal, and it runs SWEET. It is dark green with grey trucks, has directional headlights, and an illuminated seating area. It is a class BFe 4/4 with 1 powered truck, and can be run off of overhead catenary. The only problem I see is that the previous owner must have wrapped it in bubble wrap for a while, because it has some round spots on the paint.(maybe it can be washed off?) Anyhow,I'm glad I had the shop owner put this aside for me last Saturday,as someone came in the past week and bought ALL the euro trains they had. Well,I'm off to run this fine piece of Swiss engineering. Cheers, Carl T.
ps,I'll try to post some photos soon.

Bubble wrap must have some hideous chemical on it that leaches off, because I've noticed when we wrap our Tech products in it directly, it'll leave bubble-marks all over it, and we've never found a way to clean it off effectively yet. Alcohol won't do it. Haven't tried Zep or any other products like it yet, but we've tried many, and for some reason, a reaction occurs between paint and bubble wrap. I don't recommend it for long-term storage, or even moderate uses of it for non-shipping purposes. Good luck with your cleaning, and let me know if you find anything that works.

I never knew that bubble wrap could do that to a finish until about 6 months ago when it was mentioned in a Cody's Office video segment on Model Railroader's site. He said he had it happen to some freight cars he had in storage, so now I stay away from bubble wrap, or turn the smooth side towards the model. I think all plastics outgas a bit over time, especially in a hot environment, so maybe that affects the paint. One instance where there must be a chemical reaction is between vinyl wiring insulation and styrene... have you ever noticed those melt marks on the inside of loco shells where the wires have been resting against it for years? I've found that a lot inside old Rivarossi locos. I used to think this meant the wiring had overheated, but that makes no sense because the insulation would have melted away if it had gotten that hot. It must be a reaction between the two.
Thanks for the link to the drive pictures, Ken. Interesting how many European manufacturers made what amounts to high-quality versions of the pancake drive.

I have always wonderd about those melt marks. What you say makes sense. I have seen it on a lot of older equipment. Somthing I have also seen is a reaction between styrofoam and transformer power cords. I bought a Marklin set from a owner who said he hadent used it in 25 years. The power cord had a whitish gunk on it where it had lain in contact with the box. The box had a correcponding melt mark.

I have a few Tyco rollong stock pieces that have an imprint of the styrofoam cradle on the paintwork. One that comes to mind is a mint Midnight Special sharknose that I bought last year.
Carl T. ps,and I had forgotten to post some photos of my HAG railcar, stay tuned.
