*** Locomotives of the Pennaylvania Great Western railway. ** This is a joint Railway. A union across the pond. East it is the Frankford Branch in Bergen Point, Bayonne, New Jersey US (toptrain). West it is the Catford Branch, in Catford, London, UK (catfordken).
I had acquired a pair of 0-6-0ts from the chief engineer at the Catford Branch, PGW, London England. They are English inside connected 0-6-0ts. The road name is LNER. The" London North Eastern Railway", I think. The kitbash came about because of the ability of using one of them which was a parts loco, and a attempt to bring it back to life. The geared drive axle was ok. The two idler axles each had problems. Breaking them down from their 3 parts apiece I was able to make 1 good axle. The motor once it was cleaned up did run so why waste a engine. Different spacing between the axels, and the fact that the side rod connecting the center axel to the front axle was bent, made a conversion to a 4-4-0 a natural. I have a 4 wheel Rivarossi front pilot truck from a Genoa American. it looks like I have the makins of a 4-4-0 side tanker. Now to put it together. Once I cut away the front part of the split frames, I lose a supporting spacing piece, which also is used to hold on the bottom plate. I have to replace it. I put in a additional insulating spacer between the frames, cut the bottom plate to match the new length of the driver section. I did some things to insulate the split frames from the new front pilot truck. Drilled and taped a new plat retention screw location. Put it all together, lubed it and it goes. The kitbashing is done. Like with any running locomotive, I am always tweaking the drive to make it better. these split frame drives have enough engineered built in problems that the tweaking is a ongoing thing. It will become a loco to be repainted or just relettered in the future. The future is now. I have stripped both Main Line bodies and I will repaint them for the Pennsylvania Great Western railway. A railway I share with a London modeler, catfordken. He at present is repainting a Penn Line Mikado. I am doing the 4-4-0t I changed the drive on, 0-6-0t , and my Jouef 4-6-2. Here is where it started. Two 0-6-0ts. Transfered from the Catford Branch to the Frankford Branch.

The one with the scrach on the sand dome became the focus of the kitbash. It changed from a 0-6-0t to a 4-4-0t.

* Here is the 4-4-0t in PGW paint, less step pilots. Front coupler box needs to be installed when front step pilot is made. Need better lighting in the train room. The loco looks a lot better then these photos show. The 0-6-0t, and Jouef 4-6-2 are comming along nicely. frank

* Well Ben, that's gone. I'm not putting it back. Any engines transferring over from Catford to Frankford must be able to conform to USA standards. Only when used with historically correct rail equipment locos can remain as transferred. So a English type streamlined locomotive used with period equipment is allowable. I will be using some of these locos mixed in with US equipment. These are the ones I need to change. frank

* On my Jouef 4-6-2 pacific, the handrails on the cab rear, and tender front, of the 6 only one was Ok. 5 had to be replaced. The trailing truck's wheels had a broken flange. I am luckey in having a trailing truck from a Model Power ( Mehano ) Pacific. The Jouef was all black plactic where as the Model Power has a metal tire rim. It is much nicer and in size a perfect match. I have 1 photo of it. it is out of focus. It shows the firemans side where all 3 rails had to be replaced. the Jouef trailing truck axel and wheels are still in place. I used white plastic round stock, 1/32" made be Evergreen Scale models. * the photo

MainLine (Bachmann) J-72 split frame locomotives. All work is done at the Frankford Roundhouse at Bergen Point. Locomitives transfered from the Catford Branch to the Frankford Branch.

Two J-72s have become a ODD couple. They look nice on the layout. They appear to be able to handle small Passenger and freight trains. Since I recieved them they have been in constant need of quartering. They run a little then go out of quater and lock up. The motors respond well to power applied directly to them. Pick up of electricity thro the wheel and split frames is erratic. This causes a jerking in the drive. The snap is so sudden even the ACC cement applied to hold drivers quatered let go. I don't know how many times the side rods will be straingned before they break. It appears these locos are to be Roundhouse and layout props. Senic aids only before they destroy them selves. Just like all my other old Bachmann. frank

HERE IS ONE OF THE FIRST LOCOS TO JOIN THE PGW ROSTER. The Hornby 9F decapod "Evening Star". Aquired directly from BR British Railway for the PGW. The tender was transfered from the Catford branch. I didn't have the correct tender and the chief Engineer, Catfordken at the Catford branch engine facility sent this one. It was a great upgrage. tottrain

* And the work goes on ! The next is a USRA Heavy Mikado. A Mantua Mike is the starting point. It has a can motor and standard valve gear. A Cary USRA Heavy conversion bolier with details is next. The choice of most likley a Vanderbuilt tender to keep it in the same appearance as Loco # 89, the USRA pacific. We will see how it comes along.

The Next is another decapod. The " Evening Star ". I have 2 of these locomotives now, and 3 of the class. Maybe one of the pair will be renamed, and renumbered. frank

* In this photo we compare the difference between a un-streamlined Coronation Class and a Duchess Class pacific. The City of Nottingham is a Coronation class. The Duchess of Southerland is a Duchess class. * If anyone here can explain what the difference is, or what is seen here, please comment. * Frank
