Anyone ever try to dummy a 2-8-0 tender drive loco before? Thought it would be neat to do a double header.

Can't see why it couldn't be done...just gut the housing, removing all the spur gears and you're on your way.

weigh the items first with motors etc, then without, replace the difference approx or else you may strain the pulling loco with to much weight, easy to find, ken

sorry i wasn't clear. The tender is the power unit. the loco is the dummy.

Going backwards is fine, going forward with the tender pushing have constant derails. Not a good design

Derf, make sure that the loco's wheels are in gauge, because if they are too wide or too narrow, derailments will be likely. If you don't have an NMRA gauge, you can buy them online or at a local hobby shop. If you're still running the tender without traction tires that could do it too, or maybe the flanges hitting the spike heads just sounds like it.

Even a tender drive loco shouldn't derail if everything is adjusted properly.

hi derf,NickelPlate759 is right,i assumed that all the parameters regards that were correct, thought that you were just removing motor from otherwise ok loco, but if you have removed the motor from tender,it will be way underweight, and could flip off the track pulling loco with it,ken
