Today's undecorated shells, meaning engines at the moment, seem to come in only one color, black. If you're painting a lighter color, is there a gray or white primer needed first, or will the final color cover the black and not shade down, ie get darker? I just bought two undecorated Athearn SD-9's and one I would like to paint the green and white BN scheme on one. No telling if I"ll ever get around to painting them soon, but wondered what painting procedures are needed for black undecorated shells so they aren't too dark, if that is a problem. Thanks!

I have painted a few black diesel shells. Colors like blue, red, orange will cover well and don't appear too dark, even without a primer coat. Yellow paint takes me about 18 coats to cover over black. For consistent color
and more correct shading try painting the model silver as a base coat. Floquil makes white and gray primer. Either one works well. As best that I can determine the main concern with painting black plastic is the type of paint. Acyrlic or water base paints seem to take many coats of paint
and appear a shade darker on plain black plastic. Enamels cover easily and don't normally need
a primer coat. (About half my diesels I'm painting black, anyway)

Incidentally, I have 4 or 5 old, beat up Athearn diesel shells that I experiment with painting.
You might try my suggestions above on an old shell to see what works. And you can practice removing paint from that shell, too.
