Thanks Frank, I need to do some fine tuning on the drive of this loco. It runs well enough, it has a can motor but the tower gears make a bit of noise. Hopefully I can get the tower gears adjusted better. If not I may look for some Hobbytown or other make of trucks. I'm not sure why the bachmann would track like that.

Guys, With the crabbing.....Did you make sure that the little round contacts were rubbing the bottom of the frame on BOTH sides?
Also, make sure that the screw in the top of the truck is NOT tight or over tightened.....As if the screw is tight and not drilled straight it will make it "lean" to one side......Loosen the screw just enough to allow it to dangle, but no more, this should help the issue.
IF this still doesn't help, check that "spacer" that the trucks bolt to from the top, and make sure its not leaning and or miss-located in the frame halves!
This should help! IF not, then I have to say that the frame is milled wrong, OR a bad casting that somehow got twisted when removed from the mold that it was poured into! That, however is some real machine work, to make it right!

I don't believe you can have a thread about the Train Master and NOT show the Southern Pacific locos!
First up is the Black Widow scheme:

Next is the Bloody Nose scheme:

These are both Athearn engines. #3034 is unaltered (and unfinished!). #4812 has had the hand rails painted, wire grabs added, and the number boards painted white with numbers added.

This is a stock Bachmann H16-44. The ATSF had H16-44s, but not this particular phase. Runs just fine as long as the kids don't crank the throttle from 0-100% in one sudden move. Then it has that odd body movement! But looks just fine as long as you speed up and slow down smoothly.

This one is also a bone stock Bachmann H16-44. N+W DID have this phase!

Sorry the black bodies don't show well in these photos.

Loads of roads used some version of the H15/H16-44. ATSF, D+RG, UP, SP, Milw, CNW, KCS, as well as a bunch out East. CN and CP also rostered them. In fact, The late phase H16-44 is exactly right for those made in Canada. Alas, neither BN, nor any of its earlier component roads, used the H15- or H16-44s.

As someone who has begun collecting the older Athearn stuff, I must say I really enjoy this thread. The blue ATSF and Espee black widow especially. The hunt is on.

John, I must say, its still pretty difficult to beat the reliability of the old Athearn units! Taken care of properly and such will warrant a long life of service on your layout!
I have many of them, right up to the demise...And I got a couple of the first RTR series Athearn locomotives and maybe one or 2 cars, and I traded a few things to get a couple Athearn Genesis items but.....I doubt I'll ever set out to buy something they're making! Unless at a good price...
