Hi Frank. I agree with Ken those were made by Athearn in the early 1990s as catalog #4309 Powered Unit and #4329 Dummy Unit. Someone just painted the trucks silver. Ken, I think your's might be in the wrong box. Or Athearn revesered the stock numbers.. Carl

Hi Frank. In 1978 Catalog #4305 Powered & #4325 Dummy Came in 3 Road numbers PRR # 8703, 8704, 8707. In 1997 #4305 & #4325 Came in #8701 only. So There are 4 Possible numbers for the PRR. You need to Find #8707 Carl

You need to Find #8707 Carl I have been to many train shows through many years. Never seen 8707. Carl Athearn also has multiple numbers on there Alco PAs 5752 was first. hen they made a set for COX with 5750. Both numbers are comon. before stoping poduction on the PAs they released a third number. I have seen it twice and cant recall it. frank

Hey Gareth,
Pennsy owned 9 TMs and had them all set up to run long hood front. By the way, each had 3 fuel tanks for a total of 4200 gallons and cost $254,602 a piece. Gearing was for 66MPH.

Probably preaching to the choir here, but Athearn definitely had some 'fantasy' schemes with the Trainmaster, as few roads had them. MILW for example, had a very similar H-16-66, but not a true TM (H-24-66).

Hey Guys:
just wanted to say that the issue of prototype railfanning and Model (Toy) trains isn't either/or. I can strive for best possible accuracy in some area's and just enjoy the simple pleasure of a "neat" Tyco locomotive in others.

Great photo of the slug, Frank. I never would have guessed one of those existed.
I have the Pennsy #8704, but I also picked up an undecorated Athearn Trainmaster shell at a show that has larger numberboards and dual light on both ends (Mars or Gyra, I assume), and a snowplow front, like those the Espee ran. I wasn't aware Athearn made both versions.

Hey Gareth, Thanks for that link. I'll have to look in my books and see if the ATSF ever tested the H24-66. Even if they didn't, still a cool idea. I don't think ATSF was happy with the FMs they had. They had several different models, but only a few locos of each model. I don't think they ever plassed a second order for any FM model.
That slug was made by N+W. They "kitbashed" about 5 of them. I don't think anyone else bothered to slugify any FMs. SP made a one-off brake sled for humpyard usage. I think I have an article on kitbashing a N+W TM slug if you want to try it yourself.

N&W had 20 of those slugs - class RPF6Y. 9900-9919. 9919 was converted from the last existing TM in the US (originally set aside for donation). In slug form it was donated finally by NS to VMT in Roanoke VA. The last few of these were renumbered 994-998 series and all were retired by 2008. The last pair worked in Bellevue Oh. Larry

Didn't see this one posted yet so I'll share mine.
Was actually owned my a friend of mine who gave me a box of HO stuff from his childhood. Came with some nice upgrades (kadee's, internal pickups are wired to motor). Motor needed some service after sitting for so long. Oddly enough this is the only blue box engine I own as of right now. But I really like how it runs!

Anyone have a spare set of plastic side frames for the Athearn H24-16 Athearn diesel? I'd gladly pay someone for them or offer some sort of trade! I need them for a Chessie System SD18, I'm making from a SD-9, that will look awesome in my Chessie fleet!
PM me if you have anything!

The Athearn FM trimount only came in diecast metal. This was one of two trucks on bluebox locos never tooled into plastic. The other was the D Flexicoil used exclusively on the DD40.

Larry, I have seen plastic, or what looked like plastic ones.... Maybe the H24-66 I had with plastic side frames, were not stock Athearn frames, but it did have plastic side frames, on the new inside bearing internal trucks from Athearn and fit as the plastic factory Athearns did!
NOW to figure out where those came from! Or well who made them!
Interesting tho... As for the longest time I thought Athearn made all there trucks into plastic during the end of the blue box era but the DD40 frames!

The only plastic H24-66 side frames I know of are made by Atlas. Athearn only made metal TM side frames.
The side frames Ray found can be used on a "Baby Train Master", the H16-66. But only the early version. The late models used the same side frames as the H24-66.
After rereading your last post though, I am a little confused. Are you looking for an Alco Tri-mount side frame or the FM side frame?

Michael, Well a few things, that picture that Ray found is of ALCO trucks, not the "Trimount" versions.....
And the Baby Trainmaster, was the H16-44......The Hxx-66 were all "Trainmasters" OR so, I thought!
The trucks that the Athearn H24-66, are Trimount, or REAL close too......If I'm not mistaken, the only differance in looks between the ALCO 3 axle trucks, and ALCO's "Trimount" trucks is the off centered axle on the Trimount trucks, and if you look at the H24-66 trucks, they do in fact have an off centered center axle!
So, with this all in mind, any one know of a company that makes "Trimount" ALCO trucks with plastic side frames, that can be fitted to Athearn trucks?
At this point, I'd even go brass if I have too! (I got the model of the SD18, done), I just got to finish building the frame and trucks for it!

Here are some photos of 3-axle trucks.

Sorry for the poor scan quality. My scanner did not like these 2(!) pages. It insisted on seperating the 2 photos on each page into seperate scans. Never had that problem before.
The text under the first photo is: "On its own A1A-A1A road switchers Baldwin used this cast, straight-equalized truck with the center axle slightly off-center. Wheelbase: 11 feet 6 inches."
The text under the last photo reads: "The F-M version of the trimount three-motor road truck is a less expensive, lighter, single-equalized design. The wheelbase is 13 feet."
Photo #2 is of the Alco trimount. Photo #4 is the FM trimount. They are very different looking. Which of these were you looking for?
If you are looking for the truck in photo #2, there are several makers. Atlas made it for the RSD-12. It is also found on AHM and IHC C628s. I have not tried to mount either on an Athearn truck. Shouldn't be too hard, though axles and journels may not line up perfectly.
Photo #3 is the one Ray had found.

Here is the deal:
All FM hood units made before the production of the Train Master, (H24-66) are simply refered to as "H-Liners". This includes all versions of the H15/H16-44. The H16-66 was a different story though. The early model was also called an "H-Liner". But in 1954 the loco was completely redesigned and is basically a 1600hp version of the TM. Since it is a few feet shorter then the full TM, the nickname "baby train master" stuck.
The late model H16-44 looks like a short TM as well. Why did it not get a cool nickname as well? Don't know. But it should have as the "baby train master" name certainly applies. Bachmann does call it such. I've even read suggestions on other forums to change the name of the H16-66 to "junior train master" and the H16-44 to "baby tm".

I do have a couple articles out of old MRs on how to kitbash an Athearn TM into a late model H16-66 if you want to give it a try. Fairly easy conversion.

Hypoponera,
You must have quite a collection of custom locomotives?
