THIS WAS IN ONE OF THE TRAIN TUBS I PICKED UP - APPEARS TO BE BRAND NEW UN USED -DEFINITLY NOT USEABLE - MOTOR RUNS FINE - THIS IS SEVERE ZINC ROT / PEST. iT EVEN CRACKED THE SHELL ON LEFT FRONT STEP/PILOT AREA FROM THE STRESS FROM BOWING. THIS IS 70'S BACHMANN -SOME TYCOS HAVE HAD ZINC PEST - BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN A TYCO BOW UP -THEY USUALLY CRUMBLED - THIS IS CAUSED FROM MOLD NOT BEING CLEANED PROPERLY DURING CASTING. BAD QUALITY CONTROL
FUEL TANK

SEVERE ZINC PEST / ROT

BOW- BOW- BOW- YOUR TRAIN -TIL IT BREAKS FROM STRAIN

STRESS WAS SO SEVERE IT POPPED THE REAR TRUCK COMPLETELY FROM CHASSIS

THE FUEL TANKS SCREW MOLD SHAFT WAS SNAPPED OFF FROM STRESS OF THE BOWING OF FRAME

LEFT SIDE VIEW - ALL OTHER PICS ABOVE WERE RIGHT SIDE

STRESS EVEN BENT THE WEIGHT UPWARD

THE SEVERE STRESS EVEN CRACKED THE SHELL ON LEFT SIDE AT STEPS AND HOOD/PILOT AREA

That's one of the early Bachmanns with all wheel drive and pickup that I remember coming out around 1972 or so, and I remember the repair guy my dad & I bought our trains to having one of these brand new and raving about it. There was a similar drive for F-Units like the AHM FT, and I've seen some of those on eBay with shells completely exploded from the frame rot. I have one of the F-Units chassis with absolutely no rot, so QC was spotty.
Thanks for the tutorial. I haven't seen one of the original Autotrains in years.

YIKES!! O_o I've never seen anything like that before. You're not looking to fix it are you? I have a spare frame identical to the one pictured (aside from the warping ).

Zinc Pest is caused by lead impurites mixed in with the zinc alloys (Zamac for zinc magnesium alloys). I have some "brand new", in the box Varney stuff - an 0-4-0 shifter and a couple cars with Zamac weights that have the same thing. The 0-4-0 frame is a banana and the weights expanded and cracked the car bodies. The alloy recrystalizes and expands and eventually crumbles.
What usually happened is somebody got a "good" price on the Zamac (because it wasn't of good quality. There was a lot of this stuff in the 50s-60s when hard type printing was on the way out. A lot of companies (even Maerklin) bought lin-o-type metal when people stopped using it. It has lead mixed in to make it easy to melt and cast the type. It looks just like pure Zamac, but since you melt down the type from yesterday's newspaper and recast it for today's, life was never an issue with lin-o-type metal.
There's no cure.
Sorry for long explanation - I'm an engineer/metalurgist

I have the same problem with a Bachmann Metroliner. Bachmann said they would send me a E60CP for $40 if I returned the Metroliner.

Last year I saw this post before I joined. So now I show my response. Boy, did I not expect that! My Modeling friend had a U boat from Bachmann, and The same thing happened. Just not as bad.

You could dropthat shell onto an old Athearn B-B uboat frame. That would give you all wheel drive and pick-up. Just make sure you use the current Athearn motor or a flat-sided can-type motor.
I have done this quick kitbash several times. The Bachmann shell looks better to my eyes then the Athearn.
