Here's my latest flea market find:

So what is it? I'm sure the experts here can tell me exactly what I've got.
It wants to run, when I connect the loose wire. I'm working on getting it permanently fixed and cleaned up. I had to take the wheels and gears out to get the front truck off, next I've got to attach the wire and put it all back together.

That a drive shaft on the right to power the front truck from the rear one?
I'm thinking Varney? Chassis, shell I don't know, plastic right?

Hi B77. You have probably have a Lifelike engine using Pennline molds . Likelike purchased the Molds in the 1960's. Due to the Penn Central road late 1960's. Too bad shell is Cracked Carl

Hey Carl:
So the chassis is effectively Pennline? Hmmm. No Varney ancestry there?

Hi Gareth. Varney and Pennline did share some Chassis designs. The road name kind of dates the engine. Still checking for more info.. Have to go down to the Vault.. Carl

I just bought a box-lot of dummy loco's on Ebay, I really bought the lot for one of them, an F7? diesel with an unpainted translucent shell. Turns out they're pretty much all Penn line, I recognize the 3 slots in the middle of the body shell now , like on yours. If you are interested in a shell for your chassis, I have a yellow UP F7? like your Penn Central available ( I'm not a UP fan ). I do have a maroon Pennsylvania shell, but I"m keeping that one. Every thing else are B unit dummies. I have Milwaukee and UP versions of those.
So don't despair, I can help out if needed. :) I found a NEAT website on Penn Line history, here :
http://www.hoseeker.org/pennline/pennlinehistory/early.html
Very neat to read about, Bowser in Montoursville, PA now has some of their molds and makes some of the old Penn Line products themselves. Nice find, if you didn't pay much for it. There's two Penn Line GG1's on Ebay for sale, apparently because they have the cast zinc shell, they're heavy, run well, and are very desireable to collectors. one's at $26, the other at $50 right now.
Anyway, if you're interested in a UP shell for your chassis, let me know.

To the OP:
Yep, you've got an early Life-Like or late Varney F7 diesel (Varney became Life-Like in 1971). The shell is former Penn-Line tooling, and is clearly cribbed from the Athearn F7. The drive is derived from the old Varney F3 and as such will be noisy, but fairly bulletproof.
The motor is the same as those used in Varney steam locomotives.

Thanks to all who commented on my mystery locomotive. I've got a couple shells that would fit it, but I'll probably keep the Penn Central shell, warts and all. I only paid 5 bucks for it along with a couple pieces of rolling stock, so as far as I'm concerned it was a good deal.
And for those who asked...yes, that is a drive shaft to power the front trucks. I had to remove it to remove the front truck. I've got to reconnect some wires, but I think that's all it really needs, aside from a good cleaning. I'll update my progress when I get time to work on it.

Here's my first all-metal Mantua steam engine, just got thru an Ebay purchase. Doesn't run, so will have to disassemble it to check it out.

Has a big wire hanging loose at the tender junction, might need to hook that up for it to work? Not battlescarred, it's in rather nice shape, actually. HOpe it runs good once I look it over and get into it some.

That engine should run. The wire goes under the tender drawbar screw. It really should have an eyelet or something on it.
Touch your power supply to the wire and the engine frame. The Tyco motor should run like a bandit. I can see from the gear that you should disassemble the engine (screw down the stack) and give the whole mechanism a bath in something like naphtha to clean off old dirt and grease. There is no plastic on the chassis so you needn't worry about harming anything. The nylon gears are impervious to most solvents I've ever used.
Once you clean up the little engine, it will run forever. We are assuming that the motor is not burned out.

Thanks for the tips, I'll take it apart and see what's up with it. I already hooked up the big wire to the junction as you said, but no fire. So I'll disassemble it to look inside next.

Here's the latest on my locomotive in the original post:
It ran well for a while, but now the gears aren't meshing. It will roll along, then stall and you can hear a zipping sound as the top gear spins agains the bottom. I ran it with no shell to confirm this. So I don't know...worn out gears?
As for its maker, I kind of had a "Duh" moment when I realized that the rolling stock that came with it was all clearly labeled Varney. That doesn't mean it HAS to be Varney, but usually I find these things at flea markets as original sets, so there' s a good chance.

B77, check the motor mounting screws and make sure they haven't loosened up, because that's usually what causes the gears to come out of mesh. If it's been run that way too much, the teeth may be stripped.

Okay, time for disappointment. On closer inspection, the motor has a major problem. The plastic housing at the top is broken where the metal clip for one of the brushes attaches (if that makes any sense). The brush will sort of hang on the broken part, but not really securely. The motor will spin, but it's hanging by a thread. Still not sure about the gears, but at this point I don't think it's worth much effort. I'm just retiring it to the shelf for now.
