I plan on rebuilding my Mantua?Tyco pacific. I want to polsih the side rods, repaint it, and find cleaner drivers. What paint matches the cab and tender? Whats a good polish? Does Mantua Classics drivers fit the older ones?

Question 1: Are you a collector? If so, just use any kind of semigloss black. If you're not interested in originality, I'd strip the loco down completely and repaint it. Not like you're losing anything irreplaceable, the lettering jobs are so comically inaccurate that anything is an upgrade. Dip any metal castings you want stripped in brake fluid, and let it sit for a few days. Use an old toothbrush and scrub off the old paint, then wash the castings. Before you paint, dip them in vinegar, then let them dry (this etches the castings so that paint sticks better). Use some quality paint, and use some quality decals.
Question 2: Any kind of metal polish will work. The valve gear is steel, and I don't believe it's plated, so you may need to use some elbow grease. Be very careful not to bend the rods. Small bends can be straightened with pliers but large bends are very tricky to replair correctly.
Question 3: Mantua Classics from Model Power use an upgraded drive, but the rest of the loco is pretty much the same. Even the drive isn't radically different. There's now a gearbox, the motor has been replaced by a small can motor and flywheel, and it's no longer mounted at an angle. You can upgrade an older Mantua with the new drive.

I'm an operator not a collector. Thanks for the help! Has yardbird trains make its move yet?
