I just acquired this one, a Playart bullet engine, powered, vintage, model H603. I love the look of it, maybe someday I can afford the rest of the set. I've had a fondness for some of the Playart diecast cars and trucks, now I've got one of their trains.

The Pantograph is a cheesy plastic affair, but I could upgrade that with some spare parts I had acquired awhile back from a deceased club member's family, he had an overhead layout, and those associated parts. I'll just enjoy it for now as it is, probably test it out on my 4' test loop today. Hope it runs good! Wouldn't mind DCC'ing this one to use at club shows.

Hi AMC_Gremlin_GT,
That is nice. Does it have dual motors? What kind of couplers does it have? I'm fond of some of the Playart stuff myself. I have this Playart Railroad Fire Dept. engine as well as the RRFD flat car with ladder, tank car, Box car and caboose. Those are a couple of Playart trucks in the picture. Those trucks are heavy.
I know I have shown this engine before, but now I have a clear picture LOL.

It's got a rear can motor only, and standard horn-hook couplers.

Funny, I just ran across a set of the Playart Fire railroad set on an auction site, Ecrater I think? Not Ebay. First time I'd seen that set, now you say you have one.

Thanks for posting that , Mike. I also like some of the Playart castings, the AMC Javelin and AMX are my favorite, being an AMC car fan and Gremlin owner. I've got to get my Playart diecasts in one place, they're spread out over different cases, so I have no idea how many I have, other than the AMCs ( about 4 Javelins, and 2 AMXs ).

My LOTW:
Is a just won off Ebay. I needed the chassis for a Triang Dock Diesel shell that Cheez sent me a couple years ago... this will give me a side-rod 1-B-1 diesel switcher which with the Triang shell and Gawd knows what cab but a one-offer for sure should be pretty cool... anyway here's the Lindsay Stubby pic...
As to the shell who knows, but I bet Shaygetz suggests it would look great on a Hustler chassis!?

Cheers guys. Hope you al had a great weekend!

The Playart F unit is actually a Bachmann F9.
Bachmann's parent company, Kader, rereleased a few lower-end Bachmann train sets under the "Playart" name for sale in toy stores and the like.
That said, I'm very, very surprised to see the "Railroad Fire Department" variant. I always thought that particular set was a Model Power one. My collection of 1980's Model Railroader mags shows ads for that set, under the Model Power name, so it makes sense that the loco should have been the Model Power F2 with the Railroad Fire Dep't paint job.

Hi graftonterminalrr,
I don't know if this helps to muddy the waters or not, but the Playart Fire Dept. trains came in model power boxes. The engine is item #9801.
Anyone know what the cut out is just to the right of the tab to hold the shell on?
Thanks Mike

The "cut out" is just the design of the Bachmann F9 fuel tank skirting. No rhyme or reason for it.
The Fire Department F9 seems to favor the CP Rail Bachmann F9 - same paint color, same nose stripes, and same black anti-glare panel. Strip off the lettering and remove the ladder, and add CP Rail decal lettering and Pacman logos, and you've got a copy of the Bachmann CP Rail F9.
As for the Model Power set, I've got an '83 MR right in front of me that has the ad for the set. You get the loco, caboose, five freight cars, oval of track, die-cast fire truck and fire chief car, power pack, and what looks like the Pola "Burning Building" kit (I have this same built up building). The set is displayed with prominent Model Power badges, and the loco is definitely the Model Power F2, no mistaking it.

I think for trains, Playart was a big reseller of others trains, rather than a producer of their own by them. I also have a Playart bay window caboose, not sure who really produced it, but I like it.
I fired up the blue and white unit last night, and after some initial misgivings, it finally took off and ran around my oval. Obviously hasn't been run in years , or at all. I liked the light up nose, that was neat. The thing sounds like a coffee grinder, though, it's loud, sounds like it's thrashing and laboring to run. LOL. Definitely would grate on your nerves after awhile. I'll have to take it apart and see if there's actually any grease on the gears.

I have to admit a fondness for PlayArt. I have seen that Bullet nose set sold in Model Power packaging as well. Also decorated for Amtrak and I believe Santa Fe. I bid on a set once , the blue one, but stopped at $75.00. I Don't recall what it went for. I have a 1980's Model Railroader with a ad for TrainWorld with Hornby, Lima ,and Playart trains. There was quite a selection. I think that little German 2-6-0 that Model Power sells with a North American tender was sold by PalyArt at one time.

Here's mine for the week. It's a Life-Like 0-4-0 from my first train set.

This thing turned me off of steam engines for years. It runs fast and shaky and the tender constantly derails. I quickly parked it back in the day.

Does anybody recognize this little guy???

I've had it since childhood, acquired around the same time as that Santa Fe GP20 I almost repainted... say, somewhere around 1980, give or take a year or two.
I don't even know what type loco it is, let alone what brand. There are some markings on the bottom, but they're cryptic...
It was my favorite, though...
If you recognize it, can you tell me about it??

It's a Plymouth DDT Switcher, and it looks like it was originally made by Mehano for ATT in the late 60's or early 70's.
http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/atttrainsresource/id124.html
I think it was picked up by Model Power after ATT went out of business, which is probably the era of yours, since ATT wasn't around long enough to make anything in Conrail livery. It's similar to the AHM MDT, but with a narrower hood and cab.
