I have a santa fe passenger and observation car that i got. someone painted the roofs of these with silver model paint and made a mess of it. Was going to try model paint thinner but i dont want to hurt the plastic. any other ideas anyone know of?

I use original formula Pine-sol...the scent keeps me out of the doghouse and it even removes the chrome plating on parts that have that.

Any paint under it? Regular Dot 3 brake fluid will take off bottle paint, but it will also take off other painted sections. If the plastic is cast color, you can remove it carefully with brake fluid by spot application, rather than dunking, to remove sections at a time without removing paint you may want to keep. Brake fluid is slow, and you can probably get the cheap paint off and leave the factory on if you remove it quick enough once softened, and get the residual brake fluid off the factory paint. I've removed tampo paint off MOdel Power boxcars in spots using just a brush and brake fluid to take off only paint in those areas. Test it on a small area first, leave it on a few days to make sure it doesn't hurt the plastic, then if not, you can try larger, more sensitive areas. Took about 12 hours of sitting to remove factory paint, bottle paint should soften quicker. Good luck!

I used DOT3 brake fluid on my GP20. Soaked it in the stuff. It took the paint all the way to bare plastic (at least two heavy layers of bottle paint) in just a couple of hours.
So yeah if you're just wanting to take off the top layer you'll want to go easy with that stuff.

This is what I used when stripping my chrome STP tank car. I usually dillute my Pine-sol with a little water just to be safe. It usually takes a bit longer then but I don't mind.

Regular strength Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. Not the Fume-Free crap, that doesn't work.
Don't go with the generic Oven Cleaner either, that also doesn't work.
It smells, but it does the job.
Spray it on, let it sit, scrub it with an old tooth brush, and bingo, bare plastic.
If the paint is old and thick, you might have to do multiple applications.
Wear rubber gloves and eye protection, trust me, you'll need it
Cheers, Ian
