I never care for that when I see it and try my best not to do it to someone who buys from me on Ebay. Shipping costs are fairly straightforward---even between here and Europe.

Hi. Erich. I needed a Cal-Scale part for my Cary SW-1500 shell. First I ordered it from the local Hobby store. after 3 months. I gave up with them. Every time I order from them I might as well say forget about it for a year.

I tried ordering direct from Bowser. The part was $1.69. They wanted $8.95 to ship it and I live in the same State as them. I ended up ordering from a Company in Washington State 3,000 miles away. It cost me total for the part and shipping $5.00.and they were very happy for my business... Carl

Erich, Over charging for shipping and handling is a common gimmick. These greedy people want paid for the time they spend, the box they use, the light bill during boxing the item, the gas they burn and all kinds of what I call, midless BS.

I have done a lot of shopping on ebay and one of my biggest agravations are when I see a ridiculous high S&H cost. I don't care what it is usualy I just don't bid. I am not going to agree on someones greed.

I have sold a little on ebay and charge a person exactly (or less) than what the USPS charges me. If I loose a buck shipping I'll absorb the loss from the cost of the sold item. I've watched ebay nightly for over ten years and high shipping costs will keep bidding at a lminimun, or not at all. These people that charge $10.00 for what I know will ship for $3.00 can keep what they have. I'm not poor or stingy, but I'm not stupid either...

I understand what you are saying Erich. I feel that most people don't bid if you know ahead of time the S&H is way too high...

I'm really surprised at Bowser for using a shady eBay seller tactic like this, and I would complain. I ordered a set of geared FEF-3 drivers from the now defunct Golf Manor Hobbies a number of years ago, which had bought most of the Rivarossi parts stock. The older gent who did the service was nice enough, and told me they were impossible to find, but he had a set with a bad gear, and he would swap it out for a NWSL gear & worm. When it finally arrived, they had charged me more for the drivers than I was quoted, and charged me about $10 for something that cost them about $2 to ship. To add injury to insult, the axle gear was mashed, and the drivers weren't close to being quartered. At least they sent me a new NWSL gear set free of charge after I complained.

You'd think a company that overcharges like that on postage wouldn't have financial problems, so go figure. To top it off, when their stock was liquidated on eBay, it turned out they did have those drivers in mint condition.

I sure hope Bowser isn't going that direction. I'm lucky, because I can get Cal-Scale parts and the like from my LHS without having to pay shipping.

Check with me next time, Erich, because I only pad the shipping a little bit.

Can't blame ebay for this. This shipping charge abuse was going on long before ebay was ever thought of...

Try www.yardbirdtrains.com if you can. Dan Bush's shipping charges are basically at cost. Least that was the amount the last time I ordered from him. I like doing business with folks like that.

Saw an auction on ebay once for a model airplane kit. $1.oo start bid. $36.00 shipping/handling
from a guy in the midwest somewhere. If you win that bid, then the seller gets the leftover money (about $32.15) and only pays the Ebay fees based on the $1.00. That was a couple of years ago, ebay may have changed their policy to counter this practice.

Yes, Ebay has basically taken control of shipping charges, and I think you can no longer charge for custom postage, only "handling", because they force you to pick a carrier and use it, and input the approximate postage by size and weight, and if it goes over what they feel is reasonable, they'll reject the seller's input. So some of the postage fraud is gone, but not all. Someone can still list Priority Overnight, $15, and then send it Parcel Post, $3.40, and make money, so it's not foolproof. But it is an improvement ( I guess ? ).
