The year is 1976, Penn Central is imploding and chasing an uncertain
America as she dashes through the melting snows, across soft ground, and
into an uncertain future. America is plunging into NAFTA, and the our
world will never be the same.

My name is David and I took an interesting photo the other day. It shows a runaway pig trying to escape
from its owner and it appears the animal is trying to hop on the caboose. I hope it does not end up at
the local town market. Photo taken at a farm near Morgantown, West Virginia.

Hi, my name is John and I took a photo of my friend Jeff teasing his wife.
He told her that he was hitching a ride on the local freight. She did not
know that he got permission from the crew to sit on the coupler while
some of us took pictures. He was lucky that the freight set had his
favorite car at its end. After he thanked the crew, they left the scene.
His wife kissed and forgave him.

Cute scene with animals at a barn.

We had a bangin' good night at the El Paso Model Train Club this evening. The Conrail
GP35 and one of the Auto Loaders are Life Like pieces traded and purchased from
TF's GMoney. The other units are from "Domingo" and "Moose." Four trains were
running simultaneously on three main lines. The tractor train is from my collection,
being the local Tycohead of the group. One thing I notice, even in the most
hardened rivet counters, there is always some Tyco in their stash.

While their enclosed gear boxes favors Heislers in mining, Ephraim Shay's invention is no slouch either when it comes to hauling black diamonds out of the mining camps.

This shay was caught on camera hauling three loaded cars from the coal mines at Diggin Hill to the interchange with the Tabor and Waldo RR at Batey Hollow.

Here it crawls gingerly out onto the high trestle. Have no fear, though, that geared locomotive is gentle on track and bridges alike.

Geared locomotives have an engine running the wheels through a drive shaft and a set of gears as opposed to a rod engine which has the cranks right on the drive wheels. Note how, in the picture of the shay, there's a crank shaft under the cylinders and a drive shaft to each truck. Gears on the wheels mesh with gears on the shaft. For more information see this link: http://www.gearedsteam.com/index.html.

Geared locomotives have more traction for their weight because every wheel is driven, unlike the tender trucks on a rod engine. This means you can have a smaller weight for a given amount of power. Also, geared engines are very flexible for a good ride and good equalizing on rough track.

Finally, they lack the big, heavy main rods on the drive wheels so they don't hammer quite so much as they go down the rails.

In 1:1 scale, I'm accustomed to running a Heisler over light rail on ties that are little more than potting soil wrapped in a thin veneer of wood. We're making great progress on tie replacement, but we've learned just how poor of track it can tiptoe over.

Snoopy reporting:

I came up stairs to the layout to catch some main line action. The little people were active today. A small diesel switcher was backing up a train in front of the Pine Hollow Passenger station. I stopped and took a photo.

Very cool switching. Could sit and watch those cars get sifted all day. Very much reminds me
of the Wiscassett and Quebec narrow gauge tourist line near Wiscassett, Maine. They used a
very similar diesel just like what your's is doing.

Two 2-6-2 Prairie locomotives have just lugged eight cars and a caboose up the 5.5% grade on the Tabor and Waldo RR. Now they charge out onto the Highline high above Batey Hollow:

Our photographer grabs his telephoto lens and pulls in a closer look:

Now the train rumbles through the town of Tabor. Our photographer has clawed and climbed up the bluff overlooking town for a bird's eye view:

Finally, the train blasts through the cut on the way out of town:

Hi, I'm Robert and I would like to post a photo taken recently. Saw some old cars on a bridge
near Easton PA heading east toward Bayonne NJ on Tuesday when I took this photo.

Good afternoon, my name is Frances and I enjoy all your articles.
I happen to be in New Jersey today and I saw one of those antique
style trains traveling thru town. I took some photos and I hope you
print them. Thank you for your time.

Thanks, Frank. Both locomotives have been converted from the plastic boiler to the metal one to improve the traction. The train is 8 revenue cars and a caboose and I don't think the two could pull another car.

I have Lima Locomotive's Shay catalog and it tells how to compute tonnage ratings. It appears that a given locomotive could pull about half as much up a 2% grade as it could pull up a 1% grade. At 5%, the rating is about 1/5 of what it is for 1%, so grade eats into tonnage rating quickly among full-size trains. I haven't done any orderly testing with models, but grades seem to affect the model trains about the same way.

This is why I typically prefer die cast locomotives over the plastic ones.

Shaggy; I read a published article about the Central Railroad of New Jersey back in the 1850. Maybe early 1860. The jist of the story was that there was a place where track came steeply down then went steeply up again. These early 2-4-0, 2-4-4-t, and 4-4-0 of the day have little real power. These light weight locomotives would get stuck down in the bottom of the center of this if they didn't go as fast as possible through this area. The only way out was to back up as far as you could go. use gravity and the weight of the train along with as much speed as you could get out of the engine as far up the other side as possible. and do it again in the other direction. Then again and again till you finally crest the top of the hill. Back and fourth. back and fourth till you get up and over.

This gives me even greater respect for the Shays that run on Cass Railroad. Some sections of the grade their hit over 7%.

Hi, this is Mark writing for the first time. I like your pictures and articles in this paper.
I took some pictures yesterday of some old engines and cars near Raritan, NJ.
Mixed set of old time passenger cars.
A meeting of two engines. One from Easton PA and the other from Bayonne NJ.
I hope you like these pictures. Take care.
