I recently purchased a Royal Castle set by Life Like at a show. It contains a Castle Class steam loco and four passenger cars. It is new in the box and was only $45.00. Does anyone know who really made this set? I think it might be repackaged Airfix. I dont own any other airfix stock (yet) to compare it too. I dont think it is Bachmann or Dapol. I thought this set was from the late 1980's but I am not sure. Any info anyone has would be appreciated.
Thanks,

X2F

hi x2f,airfix made trains in the late 70s,early 80s,they brought a breath of fresh air to model railways, cleaner castings, items that had previously not been released here in uk,made hornby sit up and do something, then went bust, moulds taken over by first mainline, dapol, then hornby see link ken

as far as i can find out the only ones made by bachmann were the wild west sets

Hi. I have that exact set, NIB never run, purchased at a hobby store in Homewood, IL (USA) circa 1986-7. All the docs are with it if you need any more info (typical Life-Like data sheets.) IIRC, it sold for around $80-$100 USD at the time. What struck me about the set was the detail/paint work. It's quite nice. Fancy box, eh? lol Put it in a display case. It seems too fragile to run around a track and kids will surely break some off the finer details off in a jiffy.

Cheers, Pete
