Here's a new acquisition I just got in the mail today with two 0-4-0 Dockside steam engines, B&O (tyco?, made in Taiwan). This is a Lima 0-4-0, #77, when I touched the power to both brass side plates it runs really well, not so well on the track - guess the contact wipers need cleaning.

How reliable are these Lima engines? I want to use an 0-4-0 to repower a Thomas type engine, actually Lady, the purple engine. Not sure about the docksiders, I hear they're not very reliable. With the wheel wiper design on those, I don't think it makes good contact. The Lima has contacts on the back side of the wheels, so maybe more pressure. Hope to get this little guy moving on wheels, and then see if I can do a sex change to a Purple Lady body. :) Opinions? Any other reliable, DCC-fitable engines in 0-4-0 configuration that may work for doing Thomas engine conversions? Also, how easy is it to pull the pins out of the wheels holding the driver rods, so can pull off the outer one, and just leave the wheel-to-wheel rod like on the British engines ? Anyone done this before?

I've spent this past winter looking for a companion to the 0-4-0 I've had FOREVER. I had to watch because there were two drive setups. One the center gear drove both wheels (which I can see in your picture). And in my experience was the better drive. Later models used a different motor and lacked the center gear between the drive wheels. I never cared much for the one my friend had that was in that configuration. About once a blue moon I pull them apart to clean the backside contact and make sure they are properly bent to maintain wheels contact. This winter I finally found a 2nd Lima so I could double head them.
And my original. If you wanna talk reliability I got this thing new almost 15 years ago. Then it sat in a box for 10 years. I pulled it out and it ran just like it always did.
Clean the contacts and watch the wheels when they get dirty, beyond that they should run just dandy!

I would use some black paint or Neolube to disguise the wipers. That would really help the appearance.

Eventually I'm going to repaint my CN 0-4-0 to match the B&O one, roadname and all. Though the colors might be a bit different. But I was planning on trying to figure out a way to disguise the wipers with paint or thin styrene.
