Hi guys! The other day I bought a Mantua Crescent Limited 4-3-2 Steamer and upon inspection when I got home, I found and speaker, circuit board and 9 volt battery in the tender box. In addition there is some type of mechancal unit attached to 2 of the wheel to make the sounds trigger. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this???
Let me know if you guys want to see pictures.

I've never seen one in person, but I'm imagining it is something like this...

Thanks. I guess it's similar but my unit doesn't have the smoke and all that's in the tender is a 9v battery, 70's looking circuit board, a speaker and some gears on one truck and wires.

| I have a 4-6-2 Mantua Santa Fe with the same set up. They called it syncro sound. There is a small gear on one of the axles that drives the sound mechanism. It's a similar set up to Tyco's sound of steam box car.

Hi Jon. The sound Unit you have is the first one Mantua and Tyco Used. It came in The tender. It was electronic sound with gear drive to try to synch the sound with the speed. Here is Picture of it.
The one the 59 chevy linked to, was the mechanical version with a Piston and air chamber It smokes and makes chuffing sound.. It was a Upgrade Kit. You replaced the Tender Floor with new floor and smoke chamber. Just add shell and trucks. Carl

Yep, that's a smoke-in-tender unit, which was a direct copy of American Flyer's old S.I.T design. Apparently it wasn't a very good seller.

THIS IS IT! Awesome! Thanks guys! Now I need to get it to work. Maybe my battery is dead. I haven't had a chance to reopen it to swap out the battery but after my first try, it did not make any sound.
