I'm new at this and would like to know what model engine this is. If anyone can help that would be great. This unit is in service down east and I would to bash it along with there rolling stock. You see I'm from down east and my layout is of the line they run on. The operate in southern N.B.

a complete athearn is what i would recommend on average about $12/25 for basic ones,the ready to run cost more on evil bay ken

Thanks for the e-mail I just went there and that is the info I needed.
I find the people on this forum to great people. I needed some parts for my 2-8-0 and Nelson and Terry both helped me out and I thank them. As for you thank you very much.
I am now looking for the small rivets to attach the eccentric crank and the crosshead to the valve gear. I had no idea what these parts were called until Nelson told me.
I have been trying to find a parts blowup for the 2-8-0 Chattanooga but I guess no one has one.
Again thanks for your help.

Yep, to parrot the above posts, that's an EMD GP38-2 built in Canada by General Motors Diesel.

The NBSR locomotives were originally built in 1981 for the Devco Railway in Cape Breton, but three were sold to the NB Southern in 2003.

I'm modelling one myself, the 2317 as she appeared in 2006 in the yellow Sunbury paint. I'm using an Atlas Trainman GP38-2 model as my starting point, and adding quite a few aftermarket details.
