Okay, what happens when you're presented with a "box" of miscellaneous building parts ... none of which are complete kits?

You get a chance to think "outside the box" ... so to speak. :^)

A while back, in better times, I purchased a "lot" that consisted of miscellaneous parts from my local hobby shop. Pieces-Parts of a Life-Like Belvedere hotel, Equitable Trust, and Police Station. It was on their consignment rack, from another modeler who was tearing down his layout and getting rid of items he considered trash.

Well, you know the old saying, one man's "trash" is another man's "treasure" ...

There were enough scrap parts for 4 walls, a base, and a roof and enough detail parts to play with.

With my trusty sledge hammer, let's see what I can come up with using some leftover detail parts of my own. :^)

I would heavily weather the parts, snap a few pieces, glue all the bits together and call it a demolition site!

I notice two of the lower parts in pic, the yellow & the gray as being the Equitable Trust Bank. The dark red pieces are the Police station I believe. Both of those kits are old favorites of mine. The Bank was one of the first kits I bought in the 70's...

Yep Walt, that's what those parts are. No - not making a demolition site. :^) The parts are all good so the building will be assembled, but with personal modifications. It'll still remain a bank, but with parts from the Police Station and window awnings from the Belvedere Hotel - looking at putting a Pub on one side of the building (I have to cut a window on that side) with the driveway and instead of a Tax Office ... a hobby shop on the other side. The handrails for the steps are kinda in bad condition, so I'll have to bend new ones out of similar diameter wire.

Sounds like a great place, much better than a demolition site anyways!

You know the one thing that absolutely surprises me every time I see a layout (either in the pages of MR / RMC or visiting a club) ... the lack of Local Hobby Shops even on a model railroad layout! I can understand a layout modeling the current era ... but come on, there was no "eBay" or any Internet Discount Train websites in the 1950s! Where's that ubiquitous downtown Hobby Shop!

You are correct HOScale Model RR... The lack of hobby shops is funny now that you mentioned it. I thought the same thing about not seeing the U.S. Post offices on layouts. I have never spent time looking to see if one (or more) could be avalible for purchase. I took the LifeLike Police station and made a really good looking Post office out of it. But I'm not sure if I am going to use it on my layout. Why?
My collection is of all the Tyco & LifeLike pieces I had in the 70s on my layout then. Plus many more that I wish I could have had then. So I have in mind just kind of tribute layout of pure tyco, LifeLike, and the few AHM & Bachmanns pieces from days gone by. Since I had no Post Office then, I find it hard to use this custom building now.

The one exception I have planned is of one I have already made. This is one of the small LifeLike lighted billboards signs that I had computer printed the Ebay logo on the insert. Since 95% of my collection was bought on ebay, I thought it was fair to offer that small modern display sign a spot on the layout.

Well Walt - you still can have a Post Office on your layout and still remain true to Tyco:

I have one of these. And the regular Burlington Unloading Boxcar. I like the USPS version more, because of the "Post Office" rather than just a power connection to the boxcar. I have to admit though, I only rarely use the accessory since "unloading boxes" really means "firing plastic projectiles" across the layout, knocking stuff over, and then crawling around on the floor looking for the boxes.

It doesn't sound like you're a Bachmann Plasticville person, they have a post office. Myself, I'm not much of an HO Plasticville person. However ... having said that ... my Lionel O/O-27 Scale layout is strictly vintage Plasticville.

Yeah, Ho Scale RR !! I had not even thought about that Tyco Post Office even though I have the boxcar to it. As you mentioned "firing boxes", ,even as a kid I never got interested in the Tyco (or other brands) of operating, or remote controlled items. Although these are toy trains I have always felt that the remote items were just a little too corny to use on my layout. The only one I have ever had was the ore dump, that come with a bunch of tyco I bought from a friend way back.

Not trying to take anything away from these great pieces as they too are a neat part of Tycos history as we know it. I would buy the remote controlled items to display in my train room.

After mentioning Post Offices a while back, I run across this one on Ebay. I remembered as soon as I seen it. I don't need one but this auction is on now...
