A major winter storm has been issued for my area - while this is nothing for most of you - in the south - these storms are usually severe. The forecast is for mixed winter precipitation with ice up to 1/4 to 1/2 on top of snow sleet and freezing rain accumualtions of 6 inches or more. I am in an area prone to major power losses in these types of storms which are not uncommon - temp today was near 60 and 70 on Monday and we had thunder and lightning. Tue & Wed highs were 40 with lows of 20 - Fridays high is 35 with temps dropping to 20's as most of precip arrives from the Gulf which is warm going over top of Canadian cold air - forecasted to be worse on saturday as temps stay in 20's and drop down to around 10 by night. Just had a truck load wood delivered for back up heat. If you have never been in the south in winter - it is interesting - we can be 70 one day and the next freezing with snow and ice. The only thing i will hate is not being able to log on here if i loose power

Hey Brian:

Spent all day driving a truck through White Out conditions and 70kph+ winds. White outs are the snow being blown sideways to the point where visibility is little more than a car length. I had to head from Toronto to Sarnia, a little North of Detroit on the canadian side. Dam entertaining.

When I lived in Jersey, the Governor would declare an emergency when there was 2" of Snow!!!!! haaa Haaa milk spewing from nostrils!

Go get some dogs and harness them to the front of the truck!

Hey know what I saw in my travels today, geez I was on the rode just after 5am! A I think early 70's Chrysler Neuport with the trunk lid removed (It was a 2 door coupe btw!) and a 5th wheel fastened in the trunk and he was pulling a goose neck 25 or so foot trailer!!!! Now DAMMMMM, I was driving or I would have had the cell phone camera out going bang bang...

Anyway, if you loose power and ya wanna yap trains phone me, we'll yap trains! I'll email you the number.

Get the snow shoes out and leave them by the door with your sheepskins!!

Your Pal from where we play Football in Snowshoes,
Gareth

Hey Brian:

I was deep in farming country. Pretty sure that was a horse or livestock trailer. I love being in places like that. Almost stopped to admire the 20+ Masey-Ferguson tractor collection under a huge canopy on a guys farm lawn except for the -25C windchill, and that my colleage today was from Guyana and would not have understood! ;-)

Love it though, saw a really cool little tank car facility...

+42° 57' 23.21", -82° 20' 29.28" Try that in Google Maps?

PS: Plenty of guys out "Hard Water Angling" today as well....

Ha-ha! You and I have talked about this before, but I'll repeat that 20 degrees isn't cold. We were in the 10-12 below zero range for a couple weeks. That's cold! It hasn't been above the mid 40's here since November...and probably won't be for a month or more. We're just now melting off our 12+ inches of snow. So sit back, relax, and enjoy it. There's nothing you can do about it anyway.

We had a few whiteouts today here in Ottawa as well. The snow was wet so it made the roads really slippery. Not a good combination On the bright side though, I think my mom has more confidence in my driving now

Yesterday - bright blue skies, temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius. Lots of snow melted.

Today - blowing snow, white out conditions throughout most of the county, temperatures around -12 degrees, about 15 cm of snow expected.

Gotta love the Maritimes...

In that range. The GTA will survive. Ironically my car loves starting in really cold temps!

I remember a day a couple years ago n winter I went for a run when it was -34C outside. Extra layers! it was sunny though so it was a dry cold!

Actually the GW folks are right. Because the Poles are warming (not the first time btw) we are getting erratic behaivour in more temperate places.

A couple of years ago Toronto got the most snow in it's history. It will affect us all in different ways!

Walt L-O-L -- This is what my street looks like and will for days as it doesn't get plowed as many other roads in my area -- Sleet fell on top of snow most of this morning and temps are dropping to around 10 tonight and single digits Sunday night which will freeze this even harder.

I'm still laughing...

That's not real snow! I wish I'd taken some pictures of what we got earlier this month! When the snow drifts are up to your waistline, then you're getting some snow.

Seriously, though...be careful when you get out on that stuff. Half an inch of ice is worse than a foot of snow. Plus, when the snow melts and refreezes it can be a mess.

i hear you B77 - we have and get worse than picture i posted - forecasting more in the coming week - right now looks like it may be an ice storm with a little snow. We do get foot snows but not all the time. Our average snow event is around 6 inches at a time. In the Nc mtns - different story - more like storms you see in northern states.

Walt - In the south - snow is not like the Northern states. It is more icy were as most of snow in your region is dryer. A lot of Yanks that move in the south flip out here when they experience a southern winter event. EVERYTHING shutsdown except for 24 hrs gas stations. Adjustment moving here is difficult for some - Schools dismiss when snow starts falling -not accumulating - majority of roads that buses travel don't get plowed. when main roads do get cleared eventually - side and secondary roads may be days before a plow can clear them somewhat keeping schools closed

oh if your driving in snow & start to skid DON"T use the brake Let go of the gas & turn into the skid Also HATE people who use BOTH feet one on gas one on brake I don't do that! I wasn't taught to drive that way Only use ONE foot for braking & going Unless like me you got a clutch When I slow down I let go of the gas before braking anyway

Looking out the window now, we're getting side-slapped by that snow storm moving up the East Coast. Earlier today, yard was green with only a couple dirty piles of black snow here and there. Now, back windows are coated with snow, got a drift up onto the front porch, the plow (once again) misjudged the cul-de-sac and dug up my neighbor's front yard, and I can't see across the field.

Perfect weather to work on one of the damaged/parts missing Lifelike buildings someone gave me a while ago because they thought it was junk. Amazing how "kitbashing" and "salvageable" are not in a lot of model railroader's vocabularies these days. :^) Oh well, just more kits for me to play with for free I guess. Toss in my Kelly's Heroes movie DVD on TV, brew a fresh pot of coffee, get out my hobby knife, and turn someone's abuse into a new building for my layout. :^)

Heh - our local meteorologist said they forecasted correctly. They said we were only supposed to get 4 to 6 inches of snow. But this morning, in non drift zones, I measured 2 feet. In drift zones, 3+ feet. So - how can they say they correctly forecasted?

Fired up my other toy this morning ... my snow blower. :^)

I'm bummed. They got over 2 feet just south of us here in NJ, but we only got 3 inches. The snow just drops off completely in Northern NJ, so this storm is completely backwards. For the past few years it seems like it snows everywhere but here, and I'm tired of it.

I have a feeling there are a few people here who would trade with me...

It's been a while since I've posted here, but after all my plans were canceled due to the (non-existent) foot-deep snow all around me, I've been catching up with my internet stuffs. It's been chilly, but not "cold".To cold to do anything fun outside, though, especially w/o any snow. Not much better than being nice and warm, talking with your invisible friends over the interwebs!!!

The snow's REALLY picked up after some fairly clear skies the past few days. I'm expecting we won't have school tomorrow...

The final tally was 2.5 feet for my area. Great powder for skiing. But north of us, barely a couple inches if that fell. Now, they're showing yet another storm moving up (they're calling it ROUND TWO), but this one is colder. I doubt we'll get a 2 foot dump overnight like last last weekend.

Luckily, I have enough train stuff to mess around with in between shoveling adventures outside around the house. Busy working on my Secondhand Lion kitbashing adventure, making my Pizza Hut sign, and a recent online purchase I've been waiting for (The Great Escape on DVD) arrived today - so I'm set.

I like caffeine and a chainsaw ...

School has been cancelled for me today, and while it's only a couple inches deep right now, it's supposed to snow for the next 24 HOURs... they're even thinking of delaying tomorrow after all this.
...and to think, I had a math quiz today...

Storm #2 for my area hit Friday 2 12-2010. Haven't been home long as i have been out pulling vehicles out of ditches and up steep hills with my 79F250 4X4. This is one of the trucks i pulled off a steep hill near me that slid into a ditch in a curve along with about 21 other vehicles. More snow is coming Monday. The winter of 2010 is setting new records across the country -March hasn't even got here yet

We finally had 14 or 15 inches here, so I'm happy. Everything was shut down for a day.
