I have a couple of the 1970's Shifters with the neat Valve Gear. The P-121-012 pickup system, which is screwed on 1 side of the chassis & places a couple of somewhat delicate flat metal contacts on the front & rear wheels, is prone to being knocked out of alignment. Has anyone played around with the pick-up system on this loco & come up with something a bit more robust? Tanked

Talk to Ray, he is the Demi-Gawd of electrical pickups. Other stuff too, but in this case well ask him for links of things he's "modded" the contacts on.

Do you mean part number 20 on this sheet?

The wiper is a very fine piece of phosphor bronze wire, I believe, and is prone to wearing through. Years ago I did a quick repair on my Dockside by cutting an N scale rail joiner in half and soldering one half over each end of the worn pickup wire... worked like a charm.
If there are are flat wipers on yours, maybe someone did a repair before you got it. I had to bend the wire with tweezers to be sure my new pickups pressed in against the flanges, otherwise they would short out on the side rod.

Nelson, its actually part # 25 on the stock # 1225/ Pdctn 1974 exploded diagram. The 0-4-0 with the 'round' motor. Comparing the 2 parts per the respective diagrams, the 1974 pick-up is the same shape, but the 2 flat 'fingers' that rub the wheels appear to be slightly wider [horizontally]. I like the rail joiner idea. More robust. Thanks Tanked

I just looked at the '74 diagram, and I never realized they replaced the pickups with more typical flat wipers. I guess there were too many complaints about the wire wearing out.
