Because I finally got my hands on one of these Mehano VGN Alcos I thought I'd post a picture. I have both paint schemes that replaced the Tyco power torqued versions in the '90s in sets and are made by Mehano. The VGN here has the traditional 4301 on the cab side while the SF is 8130.
It has a can motor, all wheel drive and 4 wheel electrical pick up and molded on plastic handrails. Of course the tank is not very prototypical. This model resembles very closely the 430 Pemco Alco that has different running gear and a one piece hood and walkway.

Hey AF. How do they run? I've always had good luck with Mehanos :)

Cheez,
I think they run good with all wheel drive. They probably need weight added to get good traction since they have no traction tires.
You can always double head them for longer trains.
Thanks for responding.

Ahh...so they're the light ones then. I think one of my heaviest engines is a Mehano...one of the lightest engines in my arsenal is also a Mehano Both of them run great though, so I can't complain :D

If I ever come across one of the Tyco issued models I may have to buy it They aren't marked as Tyco though are they? O_o

These aren't marked Tyco but are the ones that were in Tyco train sets in the early '90s. I think they would be interesting to Tyco collectors since they represented Tyco. Mehano also made a Alco 628 in SF with #1102 that replaced the Super 630 in Tyco sets. I would like to collect the sets but they are not that plentiful so far.

These engines run good, although light, pull 4-5 cars ok.
I think Tyco was also selling PT powered Alcos at the same time according to the catalogs.
