Taking a small road trip to Old Fort Trains Friday Jan 22 2010. Will shoot video and pictures and post sometime Friday evening or saturday. A friend and my daughter are going with me. Haven't been to a model train store in over a year - looking forward to just getting out - my friend has never been to this store which is located 90 minutes west of me. Planning on a little railfanning too as Old Fort see's heavy train traffic (Norfolk Southern) going up and down out of Old Fort past Andrews Geyser into Black Mtn. Some of the trains are broken into sections coming down and up mtn

Today was GREAT - Had a blast with my daughter and my friend. We spent the whole day in the Beautiful NC BLUE RIDGE MTNS. Started off with a breakfast stop at Waffle House then drove 90 minutes to Old Fort NC to Old Fort Model Trains. Spent over 2 hrs in there browsing. My friend purchased around $400.00 in N scale -- Locomotives - 3 Kato - 2 BNSF SD70's - 1 - SD80 Conrail and several pieces of rolling stock from various manufactures totaling around $80.00 - he is single and not dating as i ribbed him and told him if he were married - he wouldn't have $400 for trains . I picked up a new Walthers 2010 book - Spirit of 76 SCL Athearn u boat shell and the owner and his wife gave me a new in box Model Power Kodak tank car for video i filmed - Very Cool tank car. We the went to The Old Fort Train station on a self guided tour and then as you exit the museum - there is a Southern caboose that is open to walk through - my daughter played in it for nearly an hr! -will post pics of it later. We then went to eat lunch at Whistle Stop Pizza and Pasta - Highly recommend - Had homemade Lasagna - AWESOME - my daughter had cheese pizzza and my friend Kieth had an all the way pizza - Delicious too and reasonable priced. We the went railfanning Up to Andrews Geyser which also home to Norfolk Southerns Famous loops. While there - a train was coming down from Asheville ( COOL) to Old Fort by the Geyser - will have video up by saturday of that train as we chased it from the geyser to HWY 70. We then took HWY 70 back to Interstate 40 West up to top of Black Mtn to RidgeCrest to look at tunnel -no pics were taken as no trains scheduled - We then took of East bound 40 now back to HWY 70 through Old Fort to Marion NC - home of the famous Clinchcross - after only being there for 30 minutes - Videoed Northbound CSX empty coming under the bridge at which on top is Norfolk southern trackage. The train, A Duke Power Coal drag, heading back to Kentucky for -re-load - video of that by saturday too - after that - day ended -headed home. This was my first true railfanning trip which was awesome. Something about mtns and trains

Glad you had such a great time! 2 hours at a train store... sounds like something I've done. What age is your daughter? My is ten. My brother and I took her on a "railfanning adventure" when she was 5. She has her own Athearn ACL (read purple) F7A.

She is 5 - Seen a total of 6 trains today - The last one was on our way home on HWY27 near Alexis NC - Westbound mixed CSX freight - long train. All of the Norfolk Southern trains were much shorter. The time spent with her today -wouldn't trade it for anything

Sounds like a great place to go. I've got a five year old too. At the last train show, she was obsessed with the g scale garden layouts. I'd better start saving my money.

I might be able to visit Old Fort Model Trains this coming week. I heard they have moved but, their website still shows the same address. At least I think thats the same address. Are they still in downtown Old Fort?
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Just got back from our family vacation. Stopped at the Model Train Store in Marion, NC, formerly Old Fort Trains. My wife and daughter reluctantly agreed. My brother and I have a rule that whenever we visit a train hobby shop for the first time we buy at least one item. I got a Clinchfield PS-2 covered hopper made by Atlas. I wandered around the store best I could and spotted a custom painted, black, Southern FP-7, also Atlas. The price tag was $65.00. Just couldn't bring myself to spend that much. The owner said, "I need to move some items. I'll sell it for $35.00." Done. On the way back through Marion, I convinced my family to visit the store again. This time I wanted more time to look. The owner's wife (I presume) was behind the counter with her baby. That kept MY wife occupied. My daughter got in on the train shopping and started pointing out items she thought I might like. That makes it much more fun. This time I got an Ulrich wood/metal boxcar kit,$5.00. Ulrich flat car, wood/metal kit, $1.00, (missing some detail parts). An old Athearn refrigerator car kit, $5.00. The Athearn kit was in a solid yellow box with red letters. I think it was from the 1950's. Couldn't resist just because it was a complete vintage kit. I doubt I'll ever put it together. Being the scrounge I am, I felt a little guilty just rummaging through his grab boxes and miscellaneous stuff on the floor. So I bought one plastic airplane model kit at retail price. He also had detail parts by Details West and other brands. Some really high end stuff like a Clinchfield Alleghenny steam locomotive, DCC with sound--$479.00. Overall a decent hobby shop. I'll try to post some pictures of what I bought on Monday.
