I love those Athearn sets. The Iron Horse or Warbonnet set should have been under every kid's Christmas tree. Great starter sets.

So true !!!

and as a aside...we have about a half dozen Athearn engines and are used to there smooth running characteristics...this new one however had a thumping noise in the front truck (very obvious something was wrong) ...a call to Athearn out in California and after speaking to Chuck a new front truck is now on its way to us...this type of service is long gone in this hobby...Lionel and MTH would not be so easy to deal with a situation like this.

Athearn gets a A plus for there efforts !!!

Sounds like the dreaded cracked axle gear syndrome. This is the first time I've heard of this with new Athearn.

I can not say for sure Nelson what the problem is ...I can say this much...I tried this set out on Tuesday night and found the problem, called Athearn at 11:00 EST on Wednesday and described the problem...the part was at my house on Friday and the train is now fixed !
That is really fast service IMO.
