If I'm not mistakin, The John English Alcos were metal castings and the Hobbyline were plastic.
I have a JE B unit shell and some Hobbyline drive parts but not enough to get one running so I can't comment on how they run.

The B unit shell I have has a step broke off but the thing that bothers me is their representation of the fan.

It's just crude looking.
I would file it off and replace it.

Ray any chance of you sshooting a pic of the fan on your B unit and sending it to me? The English stuff was in the day touted for it's simplicity of assembly so maybe that was also reflected in the casting of detail?
