Latest edition to the roster at least until my Metal mantua Sharks arrive from GIC:

This not only has the flywheel system, but a multi-ratio belt wheel for adjusting the speed range!

Hey Cheez:
Gotta find out more history about this. Needs some kind of belt. My understanding was it was a steel spring type of belt as was in some brass locomotivs produced in the 60's.
The paint makes me think a previous owner liked the BN? The motor runs and it was only $10 so... and I like metal Varney''s. The multi ratio drive wheel is kinda cool...

"Multi-ratio belt wheel". I just made the connection between that name and the wheels sticking off the rear truck. That is cool! Good luck getting it running (I always have trouble with belt drives ).

Here's a DD40, I traded Matt, MM1498, a power pack for the loco. I wired the two motors together and added DCC. It's an Athearn blue box.

Glad to see the DD40 up and running Eaglerock!
Gareth, once you said that Varney needed a spring-belt, I was reminded of the springs used to mount decorative plates to the wall. I dunno why, I don't think those would fit. Maybe something I tried on my Walthers doodlebug, which uses the same sort of belts. Awesome looking loco anyways!

Nice pieces guys...
My pick this week is the Athearn Hustler...still the coolest little switcher ever made. Mine came as a shell first, eventually I found a trashed shell with an excellent mechanism for transplant...

Here's my last minute choice for LOTW. I've had two BN sharks for a while, and neither run well. I tried repowering one, but the cheap gears made the results less than desirable. So today, my daughter asked me to "dummy up" her Life-Like Chessie F9. I put the shell on an Athearn dummy frame for her to push around her track. That left me with a LL F9 power unit, so with only slight modification I made this:

I know it's a rivet-counter's nightmare, but it runs pretty decent and gave me another semi-reliable BN for my fleet.

Hi Gareth!
Nice find. All my Varney diesels have normal gears without flywheel. I am a bit afraid of belt drives. Varney used metal spring belts, but I would try out some rubber belts (I dont know the english word, we call it `"O-Ring" in german). They are available in many sizes. I think it runs very quiet with the closed gearbox. - Erich

The "flywheel" in Gareth's F3 is actually a Jerry Martin centriclutch.

Those clutches were also seen in the original Revell diesel line. I have one in my 1957 Revell NW2.

Hey Ray:
I'll have to get that apart to see but, I thought it was just a flywhel hanging off the arnature shaft!
Btw; I had a Canada Post envelope in my mail today and it was a request to submit a questionaaire, to the USPS.
We'll have to confer about that....

At a train show this past weekend with mostly O-gauge stuff. Kept eying this up, made a few passes at it. Guy dropped it from $15 down to $10 at which point I couldn't say no.

Another Rivarossi/AHM offering. I really like the detail for as old as it is. However it runs kinda fast & jerky. Plus the rear truck is the only one under power, it picks up power from far to few axles, and its almost featherlight. That said, a friend as a P2K E7 powered chassis that I bet I could cox to fit under this

Are you asking about the E8? There is a steel fork just above the coupler that holds the motor in the truck, and you have to lift it and pull it backwards.
