Was that brown-boxer originally in the kit? 
If so, a year in the packaging's transition period would make sense to me. But I'm no expert on the subject by any means!

Looks like a 62 or 64 Mammoth of the Rails set missing the M&StL "dizzy brakeman" car.

Ken,
As Bob T sez you have a Mammoth of the Rails set missing the 326A animated brakeman car. The brown box skid flat with dozers is a substitution not original to the set.
We can further narrow the set down to 1962 by the packaging. It is a T6218 which can be verified by the label on the edge of the lid.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
