Here's a pair of Tyco GP20's. The front loco I found at my LHS for $5 bucks. They said it didn't run, all it needed was traction tires and away it went. The second was put together fom my parts box. It's amazing what you can put together once you do a little digging.

LOVE the ferris wheel in the back, too! Any chance you can put it in the "ferris wheel of the week" thread?

Junk box cobbles this week, eh?
A pair of early 80s Life-Like GP38-2s that were rescued from a barn hay loft, they were essentially complete...near mint even... but the Santa Fe needed railings which I cobbled from a rotting hulk in the same box. What impressed me about them was that, for toy trains stock, Life-Like went to the trouble of color matching the railings, something tat wasn't done on quality stock 'til the last 10-15 years or so.

One of these days I'm going to take a video of the layout with the rides in motion and post it here.

Not exactly "junk box" but this is cobbled together. I had to disassemble three Athearn locos (two dummies, one powered) from various sources and match up parts to get exactly what I wanted. It's got an older Athearn drive and runs smooth and strong. It's currently my favorite locomotive to run.

Going for the "cobbled" or "kitbashed" loco, may I present one that turned out poorly ...

Cobblers, eh? It just so happens I did one this weekend before the theme came up!
Digging through the box lots, I found an Athearn GP7 chassis & motor. I don't own an Athearn GP7... but wasn't I just talking about my Lionel Chessie Gold wreck? Eureka!

So now all it needs is a fixed rear pilot, and some handrails, and it won't be so sad after all.
BTW to be an accurate model. that loco was supposed to look something like THIS:

AThearn "Special Edition" GP40-2 from... 10 years ago? This is actually the second unit that Chessie ordered new from EMD, in 1972. It was painted to commemorate EMD's 50th Anniversary (going back to the original pre-GM days of EMC). It was preserved and repainted into the gold scheme a couple times.
Frankly, while I think it's a cool and unique scheme, it sort of bothers me. How odd is it that a corporation like Chessie System - which practically wrote the book on corporate image management, public goodwill and PR - never did bother to make any Bicentennial equipment (one of the very, very, very few railroads with this ignominious legacy), but then commissioned a loco to honor another corporation as one of its first (it wasn't GM's idea)?

eaglerock109--Awesome locos! I just repowered one of those. Yours look great with the handrails.
shaygetz--Nice Life-Likes. My first locomotive was a LL gp38-2 in Delaware and Hudson. Gave me a soft spot for LL and the D&H. I'll show it on here someday.
GIC--great Chessies! I showed my daughter the pictures from the Lionel thread, and she went crazy. I don't know what it is about Chessie, but she loves it. I'll have to find one of those.

I think I like the looks of the Athearn GP40-2 better. I take it that it needs brass handrails added to the kit? I certainly am willing! Gotta go on eBay and put that on my search watchlist.
That is, unless anyone has one for sale or trade....

| Great find and good pics. It's amazing how well these locos can perform with just a little TLC & tweaking. Rob
