2 Engines one track?
Wednesday, December 02, 2009
This has probably been answered many times over however, I did a search and got nothing. Is it possible to run 2 engines on one track? Thanks for your patience with me....

Yes you can. They will not run independently from each other (both the same direction and relatively the same speed). Unless you buy a DCC system and install decoders in each locomotive.

This is why you wire your track in blocks. Use plastic rail joiners to insulate sections of track and then wire each section to a switch. You can then turn sections on and off as necessary. Two trains can run at the same time if necessary, such as to "shuffle them around" on separate blocks of track, but you really only want one going at a time per power pack. The other would be sitting still, such as parked on a siding with the block of track switched off. There are many, many good books out there on the subject, and probably web sites as well. I learned everything from a small pamphlet published by Atlas. A book can help you better than I can explain here.
Of course, if you're going DCC then ignore everything I just said.
