has anyone tried taking out the plastic wheels & axles out of a tyco truck & replace them with athearn axles & wheels in their place?
i've got a bunch of athearn wheel sets on the way. i'm hoping it will make the tyco's a little easier to roll. the factory tyco cars won't coast worth a crap & act like the brakes are on all the time. i'm wanting to free up some of the drag. has anyone tried this?

I've never had good luck fitting random spare inexpensive wheelsets in. I'm sure I've tried a number of Athearn, Roundhouse, Walthers, Concor and others among the dozens r random ones I had to try in the past.

The bad thing about hong-kong plastic Tyco trucks and wheels is they are not all the same: some use a fat angular axle tip, others are a sort of "blunt needlepoint" (if that makes any sense). But either profile seems unique to Tyco... even other toy/RTR makes like Like-Like and Bachmann do not fit.

That said, I did happen upon one wheelset that seemed to work well: Proto 2000. But this is an expensive proposition.

In the end, what I've done is cherry-pick older scrap cars with the metal needlepoint axles - those actually perform quite well. You'll find them on the later redbox era cars and some early brownbox as well (with plastic - not metal - trucks). Those crappy older swift reefers, texaco tankers and other common throwaway cars can sometimes have some parts value... the needlepoint metal wheels are a direct swap into 95% of brownbox plastic trucks. I had to upgrade my Trailer Jet this way so it would run. Otherwise it was like trying to pull a stump or a brick wall, as you know!

I like Shaygetz' idea, if you don't mind modifying the car itself. If you'd rather keep the car original, Brianstyco has a thread somewhere about reaming the truck bearings with a drill bit to accept standard (athearn, et al) wheelsets.

i'm going to put the athearn wheels in the tyco trucks.

i was wondering if i might have to drill on them a little. i remember seeing something about it but i couldn't remember who wrote the thread on it, or how it was done. if i can find it, i'll post a link on this thread too.
