Here are two Items you hardly see. Athearn in the late 1950's early 1960's Tried to make steam engines. They tried to make a 4-6-2 run with their Rubber band drive in the tender. But, that did not work so they tried a gear drive. Using Plastic drivers and with the tender picking up the current. The first was The B & M engine. Along with the Engine they made a B&M Caboose. After 3 Try's to make it work they gave up, they stopped making the steam engine and stopped making the caboose. Making the two items some of the hardest to find Athearn. The Engine had the road number 3710 on the cab along with P-40. I had to replace the cab as it was damaged. Look at the wheels on the tender they are Roller wheel sets that are used on the rubber band drive.

Very nice set, Erich. Does the Pacific run? They had a number of drive train designs, and all were problematic. If it doesn't have any split gears, you're lucky. I've always thought they were good looking engines, not to mention a model of a prototype you don't see anywhere else.

Hi Nelson. The Plastic Drivers are still Intact. The Engine Runs. I doubt if it can pull too many cars. The later Designs with Metal Drivers Pulled better. Carl

I just acquired one of these, and was immediately struck by the Tender axles, which of course look like any Hi-F Athearn, showing it's original design lineage.

The B&M RR Historical Society has a modelling arm that publishes a Modelers "Notes" monthly I think. Each monh for the last year a very talented member has been documenting the kitbashing of this unit into an excellent B&M P-4. I'm toying with buying the "notes".

How many Athearn Steamers were there?

1/. 4-6-2 Pacific

2/. 0-4-2T L`il Monster (Vulcan)

I have both of the above, I think there was an 0-6-0 switcher. I think thats it till the recent Genesis Additions.

Anyone add to that?

That article I mention above I'm going to purchase, when it's complete.

Nice thing is, it uses Bowser 80" drivers, replacing the originals and I have a Bowser K4 WITH Bowser 80inchers that will be a donor. The K4 will have the Belpaire ground off, the pilot replaced and be Canadianized. I should end up with two nice runners...

I have an 0-6-0 set aside to sell in my train show stuff. The problem with those is you'll never find one that will run unless you can find an unassembled kit. The main gears on the drive axle were made slightly undersized, and in 45 years they've all split - similar to the problem that some Proto 2000 engines with the cloned Athearn trucks have. I've had 3 or 4 of them over the years and every one is that way. I took one apart to see if I could come up with a replacement and that was as far as that got.

The Pacifics you have to watch as the chassis can suffer that pot-metal fatigue, I've seen some that were bent like a banana - which is rather unusual for an Athearn product. But every one of those I've had that was intact, has run well and pulled decent. That B&M caboose is one of the most scarce Athearn items, short some of the special run stuff.

WELL NOW I know what that SP tender I have goes too! (It has no frame!) BUT I also have a boiler for this same locomotive, which means I've had 2 of the Athearn 4-6-2's, and one of the 0-4-2T, AND last but not least parts to a 0-6-0! (hmmmmm.....I think I have another of the 0-6-0, but I'm not sure!)

NICE tread guys!
