Whats in the box?

If Santa Claus brought you a Tyco train set Christmas of 1953 this is how it was packaged. Not very big, the box stands just 6 inches tall. If you look real hard at the end you can just see a faded red stamp with the stock number of T-3 showing up best. The complete lettering reads;
Train Set No T-3 Price $36.95
Lets open it up and look at the goodies...

Tyco 309 4 wheel Caboose Little Trains 309 cataloged 1953-954 A nice little caboose But wait, its lettered for Little Trains! Shoosh, what kind of name is that for a railroad? Its bad enough when Mom tells me to go play with my little trains. Now the guys will be making fun of me Cant grownups get anything right?

Very nice! Thanks for the history, I can't believe how much I still have to learn. Who took the photographs? They're very good, very crisp.

I like that set. Especially the TYCO and engine number on the tender. I have the cars and the little trains caboose but, not the engine with the those markings or the set box. Did you have that set or did you just pick it up..??? Carl

Todd,
I took the images... it's probably the last physical thing I can do. When your lady sells lace by catalog and on the web one learns how to photograph detail if one wants to eat.
Carl,
I picked up this set at a show... When I first saw it I thought it contained some kind of building or one of those tunnels like Mantua sold.

That's great stuff! I also have a lot to learn. As someone who got into HO with Life-Like in the late, late 80's I've learned a lot from this site.
Some things I've learned only in the last couple years:
1. HO scale goes back to the 1950's. I used to think it was all Lionel O back then.
2. TYCO wasn't just a toy company in the 1980's. They made serious trains for a long time.
3. Loop and Hook couplers? Really? Wow.
4. I still have a lot to learn.

My thoughts exactly! At least it was a bit of a deal compared to buying the items seperate. I wonder if Loopy paid much more than the original price for this beautiful set?

Ahh! I see you found the proper assortment since you tasked me with photographing it. As I recall it had three Rock Island gondolas then, and there was question if those were correct. Not that I minded, being a fan of The Rock. I like the write-up and as has been said, who needs me anymore when you can take photos that well? Good show!
I think one of the more interesting things about that set was the way the cars were packed in the box. The cardboard inserts were a very flimsy stock, yet sturdy owing to how they were folded. Properly inserted you couldn't see the car even when removing the box lid.

That's quite a time capsule, Loopy. What I find interesting is that Tyco actually used RP25 flanges back then. I had a few Tyco cars of that vintage when I was a kid, and they were my favorites.
